When the first trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was released back in December, I didn’t think much of it. Sure, I enjoyed Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but that was mostly due to my bias towards James Franco and Frieda Pinto. The first Dawn trailer looked bland, both in its color palette and subject matter in which the humans and apes are about to engage in war. Fast forward to last month when the second trailer was released, and I found myself quickly turning a 180. There was a heightened sense of horror with this new trailer, perhaps led by Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) developing voice and the fact that animals shouldn’t be talking. With this third trailer, I’m completely on board for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

While Rise of the Planet of the Apes featured some nice action and large set pieces, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sets the stage for an all-out action film pitting the humans against these evolved monkeys. Of course, with the emotional backbone of Caesar and Dr. Will Rodman’s (James Franco) connection gone due to the latter’s lack of appearance in this film, the drama comes in Caesar’s struggle between his emotional connection to his human upbringing and his newfound role as leader of the apes. Talk about drama.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters on July 11th.
