Michel Gondry is returning to his romantic roots with his next film, Mood Indigo. Based on the novel of the same name by Boris Vian, the film is a whimsical romance story starring Audrey Tautou (Amelie) and Romain Duris (L’auberge Espagnole) as two adults that inexplicably meet at a party and fall in love. The trailer focuses largely on the first meeting between Colin (Duris) and Chloe (Tautou), but jumps around in time, showcasing Gondry’s patented brand of fantasy elements.
It’s good to see Gondry return to a romance/fantasy film in the same vein as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, and the reunion of L’auberge Espagnole actors Tautou and Duris is promising. Mood Indigo is also Tautou’s return to a quirky fantasy film more akin to Amelie than any other film from her career; the pairing of the actress with Gondry could potentially become a long, fruitful relationship, if the two decide to explore the vast promise of the first modern “manic pixie girl” with modern cinema’s most creative director.
Mood Indigo will be in theaters on July 18th.
