Photography by Nick Risinger

Have you ever tried to describe the sky to somebody, but found yourself at a loss for words? It’s beautiful in how vast and open it is, yet it’s hard to find the proper words to fully express exactly WHY it’s beautiful. What better way is there to demonstrate beauty than with a photograph? How about 37,000 of them? Amateur photographer Nick Risinger recently took on a 3 1/2 year project to capture the “largest-ever true-color image of the stellar sphere,” traveling from western United States all the way to South Africa.

To accomplish the project, Risinger and his father used astronomical cameras to capture photos of the sky every night in three different color wavelengths, giving the panorama an extra layer of depth. What’s more captivating about the project is that the full project is completely interactive so viewers can pan, scan, and zoom through the full photograph. Risinger currently has no plans to make money outside of selling posters he’s printing of the final image. Rather, he wants to donate the full panorama to a museum to show a full picture (no pun intended) of the sky as opposed to the Hubble telescope’s bits and pieces.
