Modok Takeover of Mondo Gallery in Austin, TX

Mondo Announces Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo Art Show

Keen readers will remember that one of my very first posts on Ruby Hornet was on a Mondo Gallery show that artist Mike Mitchell had last spring. The show featured Mitchell's color-filled portraits of various film characters, including Pulp Fiction's Mr. Pink, Oldboy's Oh Dae-Su, Drive's Driver, and more. The artist and Mondo have teamed up once again for a new show that will focus on the marvelous side of comic books: Marvel.

The new show, entitled "Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo," will run from April 25th until May 17th, with a special opening night event on April 25th from 7pm - 10pm with Mitchell himself in attendance. The pieces, some of which can be seen below, will highlight some of Marvel's iconic characters, like Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, alongside lesser known figures, including Bullseye and Power Man-era Luke Cage. Considering Marvel's growing stable of film properties (let alone the rising portfolio of Sony and Fox owned Marvel film properties), it's only a matter of time before lesser-known characters like MODOK, Iron Fist, and Nova are plastered onto underwear, shirts, and billboards everywhere with The Avengers and X-Men.

Some of the pieces will also be available for sale at the show in limited quantities for $60 each. You can find the list for the available pieces below. If you do attend the "Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo" show, let us know how it is!

Robert Rodriguez Museum during SXSW 2014 by Virgil Solis

[SXSW Photos] Robert Rodriguez Museum

Photos by Virgil Solis

Friday, I was lucky enough to be invited to the press opening of the Robert Rodriguez Museum here in Austin during SXSW 2014. The pop-up museum was exhibiting art from acclaimed fantasy/science fiction artist Frank Frazetta, a Sin City masterpiece by Frank Miller, original art by Drew Struzan, new pop artist Sebastian Krüger, and bronzed art sculptures by Clete Shields. In addition, the museum had Sin City character portraits that Mr. Rodriguez worked on with the actors and his mentor artist George Yepes during the filming of Sin City 2. This was definitely one of my highlights of SXSW 2014. On top of the really awesome art that was at the museum, I was going to be able to meet on of my idols.

Robert Rodriguez has been someone who I've looked up to for a very long time and someone who inspired me to chasing a creative career. Growing up in America, we didn't have a lot of creative and cool Latinos to look up to. Robert Rodriguez showed a younger generation of Latinos that we can chase creative jobs, even if you have to donate your body to medicine to fund your first movie. After watching El Mariachi and reading his book Rebel Without a Crew, my brother and I were Rodriguez fans for life. With all these thoughts running through my head, I was  hoping I didn't fan out too much and kept some level of professionalism when I met him at the museum. As soon as I walked into the museum, Robert was there talking to other media people about the artwork and other art he was excited for. You can tell that Rodriguez still is a boy at heart as he talked about some of his heroes in art and the awesome work being exhibited.

As the majority of everyone there was a media person from different outlets, everyone wanted a piece of Rodriguez, so I waited patiently for an opportunity to talk to him for one minute to just thank him for his influence and art. When I finally mustard the courage to walk up to him, the media vultures were waiting for him to pounce and get their turn. In the quick second I was given, I asked him if I could take a photo next to the life-size Marv statues. He said sure, and I shot the image, and as fast I hit the shutter button, Robert was being pulled in a different direction to speak to another media person. I barely said thank you, and just like that, my opportunity was over. I stuck around and talked to some great people from his team about the limited edition posters for sale and took in the art a little bit longer before I decided that I was happy with the photo and just the chance to be in the same room as Robert Rodriguez. By the way he treated everyone, he is one of the nicest guys, and I'm sure another opportunity will arise where I will be able to have an actual conversation with Mr. Rodriguez. Until then, enjoy some great art from the museum.

Your Favorite Album Covers Pixelated with Legos

Lego always takes me back to my childhood, and people are making some pretty crazy stuff with Legos like cars. Back in the day, it seemed like Lego had an infinite amount of sets, and now they've expanded to creating sets like the Simpsons House set, which looks pretty dope.

Somebody has taken the Lego creativity to the next level with Lego Albums. You read that correctly - somebody has dedicated a Tumblr page entirely to iconic albums pixelated them Legos. When you visit the page, you'll find all the classics in a variety of music genres, ranging from artists like Michael Jackson and The Beatles to Kanye West and Nirvana and many more. It's pretty cool to see these albums in Lego form, so check some of them out here and visit the site for more here.

[Video] Make Drawing Easier With The Pencil

There's no better feeling than taking a pencil to the pad of your favorite sketch book. As technology keeps evolving, many are dipping into the digital world, slowly leaving behind the pen and the pad. With all the options out there on the market, there is nothing that can really compare to actually holding a real pencil. With this new artist stylus, the Pencil gives you the feel of a real pencil, making it easier to create art on your iPad. Coming in at $50, the Pencil is a good option for artists looking for a new stylus since it has an "adaptive palm rejection feature that instantly knows whether it’s your hand or Pencil touching the page." It's as easy as drawing and erasing, just like when you first learned to draw.

Takashi Murakami & Angela Lindvall For Harper's Bazaar

If you have seen the film Jellyfish Eyes from Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, then you will probably recognize the creatures seen in the photos for Harper's Bazaar latest issue. Murakami is known for his animated characters and surreal cityscapes, and now he has brought them into the real world. With the help of photographer Jason Schmidt and model Angela Lindvall, Murakami brings some of his film characters out to spend a day out in the streets Los Angeles. Yoskay Yamamoto “Submerged” Exhibition At Times Square Hong Kong

LA based artist Yoskay Yamamoto latest exhibition, "Submerged," takes him to the streets of Hong Kong. Located in the Causewaybay district, the exhibition contains some of Yoskay's characters that are larger than life. The exhibit features two large pumpkin heads standing six meters tall, and if my math is correct, it is around 19 feet. There are also two smaller models that tie into the "Submerged" theme, so if you're in Hong Kong check out the exhibit running through October 31st. To get more familiar with Yamamoto's work, head on over to his website.
