San Francisco Reflected in City Puddles by Angela May Chen

Photos by Angela May Chen

By focusing on the ground rather than the horizon, photographer Angela May Chen captures street photography in San Francisco reflected in city puddles. For a city that's already known for it's beautiful skyline, Chen captures it's lush architecture from reflecting it in upside down view points, and unique angles, pretty much in ways it's never been done before. Through each watery reflection, Chen has been able to transform everything from the city's rich cityscapes, bridges, sidewalks to even trolleys and palm trees, into a whole new perspective. The creative combination of various textures and elements causes the viewer to take a deep look, as each photograph begs for a second glance.

So the next time you're walking through your town, take a look at the reflections in the puddles, it's guaranteed to add amusement to any rainy day. Check out some of our favorite photos below, and be sure to follow Chen on her instagram page where you'll find some of her ad work, more San Francisco street perspectives, and even some delicious looking food photography. Her eye for the city will definitely want to make you pack your bags and go.

Everybody is on their phone. Thousands of people everyday wear out their thumbs scrolling through photos, deciding which ones to post on Instagram. It’s so easy to do whether you’re a photographer or not; just point, shoot, choose a filter and post whatever you created. From funny duck face selfies, to breathtaking landscapes, to gritty city streets. Some use it as visual journal giving glimpses of their lives, while others have taken it to another level by creating works of art. All of us at Ruby Hornet are fans of the social media platform and decided to do a weekly series highlighting people whose Instagrams stand above the rest. Let us know in the comments section if you’d like to be featured, or let us know about some other cool Instagrams. Be sure to follow Ruby Hornet on Instagram, too.

This week’s featured Instagram comes from @ditsen. I'm a really big fan of food photography, and some of my favorite accounts belong to those that are food photographers. I'm not talking about photos of someone's lunch from some fast food chain, but people that have a passion for creating in the kitchen. That's why I'm drawn to this Instagrammer's gallery because you can tell a lot of effort and creativity went into each dish and each photo. When going through her gallery, you'll get a lot of goodies and some other stunning landscape shots from time to time, but the focus here is the food. Be sure to check out some of her photos below, and head on over to her Instagram for more.

Big Sur, California by AngieStar Photo

[Through My Lens] A Journey Through the Coast of Big Sur

Photos by AngieStar Photo

The USA Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is perhaps America's most dramatic scenic drive. And along this coast is a region called Big Sur that lies along the Central Coast of California, and renowned as one of the best of scenics drives in the whole world. As someone who has road tripped through a good portion of the country already, I made it my mission to take a journey through the coast of Big Sur to see for myself.

I started my drive from Los Angeles just before sunrise, so I would have perfect daylight by the time I reached Big Sur. Immediately, I was taken into the high coastal cliffs, following each twist and turn there is along the Pacific Ocean. With the perfect California breeze into my open windows of the car, while listening to a perfectly timed music playlist, I was awestruck. And just when I thought scenery couldn't get any more amazing, I found myself in Big Sur. To me, the area is more of an experience than a tangible place. There are no stop lights, or shopping centers, just 90 miles of driving along a narrow two-lane highway with breathtaking view points and campsites. The wildlife is a whole other aspect of Big Sur as one of your first stops is on the beach at Piedras Blancas in southern Big Sur near San Simeon to see hundreds on Elephant Seals in their natural habitat. Then with the abundance it birds and forest animals, every one of your senses are heightened with all the combined elements of life.

Here are some of the photos I captured, and what makes me want to back. If anything is taken from this, it should be to take a trip to Big Sur; it's worth it.

Adobe Reveals Touchscreen Version of Photoshop CC At Surface Pro 3 Event

It looks like Adobe is going to make a bigger push to enter the market of touch devices with its newest offering, a touch-friendly version of Photoshop CC. Adobe showed off this new version of Photoshop CC at Microsoft's launch of the Surface Pro 3, and from what Engadget reported, the app is a fully powered version and not just simply a mobile version with basic features. The new version features larger UI elements for easy use and is designed to be used with either a finger or stylus. Like other mobile products, you'll be able to interact with the screen with commonly used gestures like tapping, swiping, and pinch to zoom. As of right now, there is no time table as to when it will be released, but with the demo that Adobe gave, it will be interesting to see what other features they will have up their sleeves.

GoPro Files For $100 Million IPO

When it comes to cameras, the conversation tends to revolve around the two giants in the camera world, Nikon and Canon. However, there are many companies out there that produce quality cameras. One particular company found their niche in the industry and ran with it, producing a product that many people have added to their arsenal of cameras: GoPro. From its humble beginnings to being one of the world's best selling cameras, GoPro has now announced that they have officially filed for a $100m IPO. Some say that this a rather odd time for GoPro to file with the uncertainty of the market and sales being lower from the previous year, but I guess we'll have to wait see how everything unfolds.

Otto Camera

Introducing Otto: A Raspberry Pi-Powered GIF Camera

If you've ever been on the internet, you more than likely have came across a GIF. There are a few options out there where you can create your own custom ones, and Otto has stepped in as another option. Otto is a hybrid of sorts as it's part still camera and part video camera, giving the capabilities of creating your very own GIF. The camera is powered by a small Raspberry Pi computer with an accompanying app that lets you create all the GIFs you want. Otto not only makes GIFs, but is also capable of creating time lapse videos. Since the Raspberry Pi computer is installed in the camera, the possibilities are almost limitless as to what you can create with this tiny camera. As of right now, there's a Kickstarter campaign going on for Otto if you want to support it..

Animated Portraits by Romain Laurent

Amazing Animated Portraits by Romain Laurent

Photos by Romain Laurent

Aside from any of his personal and commercial projects, New York City based photographer Romain Laurent, challenges himself to create amazing animated portraits. The animation works by looping multiple images together, creating a gif, and the project continues as he posts an image a week on his tumblr page.

Each image is entirely different from the other, and each subject creates its own visual story. Laurent says that the bizarre and unique images are a low-pressure way to experiment and be creative without expectations. Specifically, he notes, “As far as the intention of the series, it’s a way for me to explore a hybrid medium, experiment and being spontaneous while still sticking to a short weekly deadline. There isn’t a common concept between each loop, I just ‘go with the flow’ and see what comes to my mind each week.”

Check out a few of our favorites below, and be sure to check out this continual weekly shares on his tumblr and website.
