Much like The Goonies, another iconic ’80s film is set to return to the big screen… just make sure you don’t expose it to sunlight, get it wet, or feed it after midnight. Huge rumors have spread around that Chris Columbus, screenwriter for the original Gremlins, is in talks to produce a reboot-styled sequel for the film set 30 years after the original. The film is on fast track production with writers Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg already attached to the film. Both Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg have been attached to the Beetlejuice sequel, so their involvement with the purported Gremlins project will further their interest in working on notable ’80s films.

Given the advancement in CGI technology over the past 30 years, it would seem likely that any Gremlins film would portray the Mogwai as CG characters. However, if there’s a way to use practical effects (i.e. puppets a la The Muppets), I think the film would benefit so much more from having actual props/Mogwai on set. Apparently, Columbus felt the same way when asked about the topic in an interview a few years ago:

I think it’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.

What do you guys think about Gremlins being reintroduced to a new generation?
