Journalists, We're Journalists Too: M.I.A. and The New York Times

M.I.A.

The title of this post comes from a Dilated Peoples track in which Rakaa declares, "journalists, we're journalists too, we can strike back."  The saying applies to M.I.A. right now, who has been on a media firestorm promoting her forthcoming album.  She talked to Complex magazine about the artistry of Jay-Z and Nas, she told Spin that she hung out with Tupac, and now she fires back at a New York Times Reporter who wrote an in-depth story highlighting conflicting images and messages of M.I.A. while simultaneously exaggerating her fondness for french fries.

The article in question was written by Lynn Hirschberg and is title "M.I.A.'s Agitprop Pop".  If you're like me, you inferred the definition of agitprop before looking it up in a dictionary.  It means a blend of agitation and propaganda.  In a sense Hirschberg's article centers on M.I.A.'s process of making music.  Hirschberg highlights the way that M.I.A. expands her art beyond the music to include her style of dress, and the political stances she makes on and off record.  While doing that though, Hirschberg continually points out opposites in M.I.A.'s life, and quotes her collaborators to sometimes make it appear that M.I.A. in her very search for authenticity veers off the path...  Something like that.  The article is a nine-page read and I found it very interesting.  Check it out here.

M.I.A. did not find it as interesting.  She feels Hirschberg edited the article wrongly, leaving out key points, including the fact that she told M.I.A. to order the french fries she symbolically eats in Hirschberg's narrative.  M.I.A. posted her own audio from the interview on her website today along with a new track "I'm A Singer", which is perfectly fitting for this situation. This posting follows M.I.A.'s tweet about the interview in which she called the news "an opinion" and posted Hirschberg's phone number.

Kid Cudi Gives Oregon Crowd First Single Off New LP

Kid Cudi

You know a song is good when it ends with a mic drop... Kid Cudi apparently ended his a few night ago in Oregon with a preview of his forthcoming sophomore set, Man On The Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager.

The album is scheduled for a 9.14.10 release via Universal/G.O.O.D. Music and what you see below is the LP's first single entitled "Revolution".  Cudi remarked a few months back that he's in tune with what fans like most about his music and wrote that the new album "is dark by nature and instead of bringing you into my dreams like my first album, I'm bringing you into my reality, good and bad. It will explain more of who I am as well as pushing the envelope musically."

The Hold Steady

"When you're 22 or 19, there's things you think you can't miss...  Then you get to 38 and you're home at 9 o'clock and you feel like, 'God, I could miss just about anything.  The second coming of Christ? I don't know-let's see if Drugstore Cowboy is on.'"

-Craig Finn of The Hold Steady in an interview with Paste Magazine.

GLC Launches "Reflections of A G" Photo Journal

GLC

GLC has got a lifetime of memories built up from his years in the music biz.  He recently told me about going through old photos and the memories they brought up.  As he preps for the forthcoming release of his debut album Love, Life & Loyalty, GL will be opening the photo vaults and sharing the story behind each photo in a new series.  These kind of things are what made me a music fan, and I'm looking forward to the reflections.  He kicked off the series with this pic from the 2005 Mix-Show Power Summit...

Griffen: "Spirit of Chicago" feat Julio and Adele

Griffen

For those seeing a new face, Griffen is an emcee from our backyard who recently signed to Scarface's Facemob label.  Griffen was singled out by Scarface specifically, who discovered the windy city rapper on Twitter.  Face snatched him up to his imprint and presto-chango, Griffen is readying to drop two new mixtapes and his Facemob debut Apotheosis. Griffen sent over a track from the LP for us to share with our readers.  It's produced by Closed Sessions alum Tony Baines, so we already know it's fresh and proper.  Bionik co-produced the track, and it's those two producers who will handle majority of production on Apotheosis.  Listen to and grab "Spirit of Chicago" below.
