The 86th Academy Awards Winners

Promotional image for the Academy Awards

An Oscar is undoubtedly the biggest honor any filmmaker could receive for their hard work in creating a cinematic work. While I may hear amongst many of the people in my life just how much they don't care about the evening's victors, I treat my viewing of the Academy Awards almost like the average American treats the Super Bowl. Growing up in an extremely small town, a lot of the nominated films weren't accessible to me and my predictions really reflected my sheltered viewings. Now that I'm in actual civilization, I've been able to catch a lot of the films, and I must say that I have become quite a professional at guessing who will be taking home the big prize of the evening. Last Friday I wrote a post on my predictions for the major categories of the evening, and I am proud to say I was pretty much eight for eight with my guesses. Perhaps I should say 7.5 for reasons of my Best Picture award, but I highly doubt anyone cares too much about that. With that said, here are this year's winners...

The 86th Academy Awards Winners Predictions

Film still from American Hustle

The early months of any year are full of awards and recognitions for all of those filmmakers who worked hard in the previous year to produce a form of entertainment that will have the capability to transcend the decades. While a variety of these award nights seem to take precedence throughout these first few weeks of the year, they all seem to merely be leading up to the largest of filmmaking honor ceremonies: The Academy Awards. The night on which the golden Oscar is distributed seems to always be the hype, and these smaller ceremonies just add to the predictions that film fanatics everywhere are making for the late winter celebration. 2013 brought a lot of excitement for filmgoers around the world, and this Sunday could be the test of whether a viewer's favorite film executed just the right amount of excellence for the Academy to spread cheer. So, without further blabber on my part, here is what I think will be receiving each honor this weekend.

We've seen the character posters. We've seen a small teaser. Now, the first official trailer for David O. Russell's American Hustle has been released. Led Zeppelin serves as the soundtrack for the trailer that contextualizes each character's personalities and the tone of the film as a whole. The '70s set crime drama features Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Rises) as a con artist and his partner (played by Amy Adams) embroiled in an underground crime sting run by a rogue FBI agent (Bradley Cooper). Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) and Jeremy Renner (The Avengers) also star. Led Zeppelin serves as the soundtrack for the trailer that contextualizes each character's personalities and the tone of the film as a whole.

American Hustle will be widely-released on Christmas following a limited release on December 13th.

New American Hustle posters are '70s chic

Director David O. Russell's next film, American Hustle, is a period piece deeply rooted in '70s art culture. Of course, that includes questionable fashion choices and frightening hairstyles. The film is based on the FBI Abscam art sting that targeted a con artist (Christian Bale) and the mob bosses and political figures he dealt with. If you haven't seen the film's first trailer from August, I recommend doing so.

Earlier this week, the first set of posters for American Hustle were released that focus on each of the main actors in the film, including the aforementioned Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, and Jeremy Renner. Some highlights include Renner's party pomp, Cooper's perm, Bale's LeBron James hairline, and Jennifer Lawrence's... Jennifer Lawrence-ness.

American Hustle will have a limited release on December 13th with a wide release on Christmas Day.

David O. Russell is organizing a reunion of sorts for his next film, American Hustle. Christian Bale and Amy Adams (The Fighter), Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper (Silver Lining Playbook), and new Russell collaborator Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) star in the 70s period piece revolving around the ABSCAM FBI sting investigating a far-reaching public corruption case that involved both mobsters and politicians. American Hustle is kind of like a Dream Team of talent from the main cast and David O. Russell, but also with support from the severely underrated Michael Pena (End of Watch), Louis C.K., Robert De Niro, and more. Bale plays a con artist that links up with an FBI agent (Cooper) who forces him to help topple the entire underground corruption scandal.

American Hustle is scheduled for release on Christmas; winter can't come soon enough.
