[Tribeca] The Adderall Diaries and the Problem with the Brilliant Male Writer Cliche
I think it was Harlan Ellison who said that most people believe they're a better writer and a better fuck than everyone else. That succinctly describes the absurd narcissism at the heart of the male writer trope: he's ruggedly masculine and yet aesthetically sensitive, he's smart in a way that's worldly rather than academic—brilliant, really—he constantly struggles with writer's block until a divine spark of inspiration leads to the rapid production of undeniable genius, and everyone wants to have sex with him because he's really good at it—no, the best, actually.
The brilliant male writer cliche is ridiculous yet persistent, and these tropes make the adaptation of The Adderall Diaries starring James Franco feel so uninspired. I haven't read Stephen Elliott's memoir of the same name, though excerpts from the book strike such a different tone from the film. It's not just because the story's been moved from San Francisco to New York. While the source material seems like a genuine exploration of strained father-son relationships and the ways people remember and misremember, writer/director Pamela Romanowsky's movie comes across as sycophantic genuflection to the idea of the brilliant male writer.
Sony Authorizes Select Screenings of The Interview
Sony has authorized select independent screenings of the controversial The Interview.
The comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is about how the duo land an interview with North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, for their famous talk show. Before leaving, they're asked to go on a mission to assassinate the leader. The upcoming release of the film has become a threat of national security in the United States when it became known the infamous Sony hackers come from North Korea. The hackers were willing to expose private information about Sony employees, as well as threatening to cause harm to theaters screening the movie Christmas day.
In an attempt to curb the threats, Sony pulled the film. Since then, fans of the film, as well as the stars, spoke out about the news. The social media world went on a free speech frenzy, and just like a Christmas miracle, Sony listened. Today, the founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Texas, CEO Tim League, released the statement below:
We cannot imagine the pressures that have been affecting Sony, at all levels of the organization they have been under attack. Amidst this unwarranted chaos, they have regrouped and listened to the public, the government and the exhibition community and responded with resolve and determination. At 10:45 AM Sony bookers approved screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and other arthouse and independent theaters across the country.
This is the best Christmas gift anyone could give us. We, both distributors and exhibitors, have collectively stood firm to our principles and for the right to freedom of expression.
Two days 'till Christmas, and I am proud to be an American.

[Trailer] Palo Alto

High school is certainly a time full of hormonally driven decisions and rebellious actions. There is this need to be full of angst yet a simultaneous desire to have complete affection. However, this angst can sometimes lead a teen to getting into too much trouble, whereas the need for affection can have one befriending a box of Kleenexes and a tub of Ben & Jerry's. It definitely isn't the easiest time for anyone, even when one seems to be succeeding pretty well. These multiple emotions that many feel throughout four short years are attempted to be captivated in dozens and dozens of films. While my own personal favorites are from the 80's generation, there are countless others made in recent years like Mean Girls, Juno, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower that take a bold stance on the controversial issues that American high schoolers face. Palo Alto is the latest film that will be taking on this challenge, covering the issues of teacher-student scandals and teenage rebellion.
Starring James Franco, Emma Roberts, Val Kilmer, and Nat Wolff, this dark drama covers a the lives of a few teens with the desire to find trouble. Roberts plays April, a 14 year old who just wants to feel love from a significant other who seems consistently disappointed by Kilmer's character Stewart's ignorance. However, Franco's character, Mr. B, sees this in April and is suddenly a bit more interested in being just her soccer coach and teacher. Simultaneously, Stewart is trying to make a better image for himself but is finding it difficult with the poor influence of his friend Fred (Wolff). The story lines appear to intertwine in order to make a film with just about as much complexity as that period in life is for all who experience it.
I must say, it's been awhile since a trailer had me so pumped up to go to the movies, but I'm eagerly anticipating this release. Franco and Roberts are two of my favorite performers, and I hope that it turns out as great as I'm hoping it to be. The latest film written and directed by Gia Coppola will be in theaters May 9, 2014.
[Video] Vote James Franco's Spring Breakers performance for Best Supporting Actor
Say what you will about Spring Breakers - James Franco's performance as the eccentric "Alien" is one of the most memorable performances of the year, and definitely near the top of Franco's career. When haven't you caught yourself exclaiming, "Look at my shiet?!" at least once this summer? I first saw Spring Breakers at SXSW and felt conflicted about it before letting the film settle, giving it a 70 at the time.
Since its festival premiere, Spring Breakers has received the most divisive reviews of the year from both diehard film circles and casual film fans; however, what has stood above the sex, gratuity, violence, drugs, et al is Franco's performance. A24 Films, the distribution studio behind Spring Breakers, has sent out a video promoting Franco's performance for Best Supporting Actor consideration for the upcoming Academy Awards. Watch below as we all relive what made Alien so memorable while still not spoiling the best scenes of the film.
Would you vote for James Franco for Best Supporting Actor?

[Video] Seth Rogen, James Franco parody Kanye West's "Bound 2" video
When Kanye West dropped the video for "Bound 2" last week, it received a lot of mixed reactions to it. Considering Kanye's pedigree and creative control over his image and branding, it surprised many people. While I understand why he did what he did (I'll probably expand on these thoughts later), it's safe to say that nobody was expecting the final product. However, that's not to say that the video doesn't have its fans.
Seth Rogen and James Franco can be counted as two of them. While shooting their next film together, The Interview, the two decided to film a shot-for-shot parody of the video with Franco playing Yeezy and Rogen playing Kim. What transpires is one of the most awkward and hilarious parody videos yet. Did you know Rogen had back hair? Have you ever seen how awkward Franco is lip syncing and compensating for Kanye's weird hand movements?
Is it better than Kanye's own "Bound 2" video? Watch the video below and find out for yourselves.
