Los Angeles is Mandating Body Cameras for Its Police Force
In a move that will hopefully set the precedent for other major American cities, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced earlier this week that he will be equipping body cameras on every single police officer in the city. While Garcetti's plan is to purchase 7,000 cameras, the first wave will consist of 800 cameras used in areas with high crime rates and police activity. $1.5 million in private funds has been raised for the initiative, with Garcetti's budget to include funding for the rest of the 7,000 cameras to be used citywide.
The initiative is the first step in assuring police are held accountable for their actions and to bring transparency to those who "serve the law." Garcetti elaborated further during his announcement, stating:
Out on the street, things aren’t always clear cut. These cameras will help law enforcement and the public alike find the truth — and truth is essential to the trust between the LAPD and the community, which has been a key factor in lowering crime to record lows.
It's unfortunate that it took the in flux of high-profile cases of police brutality this year to push the button, but the announcement is a step in the right direction for a safer future. There's the old adage "Who watches the watchmen?" If the initiative is successful and becomes the standard for all American cops, the answer will be everybody.

L.A.'s Punk and Rap Past Captured by Photographer Janette Beckman
Photos by Janette Beckman
Janette Beckman is a New York based photographer born in London, England, and is a product of the '70s punk movement. Although much of her portrait work is often associated with New York, Beckman put together a gallery that opened April 17th of select photos, dating 31 years ago of L.A.'s Punk and Rap past. The collection of various iconic photographs includes Johnny Rotten, Joe Strummer, Debbie Harry, Slick Rick, Keith Haring, and Run DMC to name a few. The exhibition is called Rebel Cultures: Punks, Rap & Gangs, and is currently being featured in HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in Los Angeles through May 18th.
Aside from the Punk and Rap scene in LA, Beckman also features photos from the summer of 1982, when she was introduced to members of the East LA gang, El Hoyo Maravilla. The poverty and culture in the area inspired her to capture many of it's members in the heart of their known territory, a perfect additional to her gallery on "Rebel Cultures". Surviving gang members that were involved were even invited to the gallery opening. Other gallery goers included Curt Smith of Tears for Fears and Delicious Vinyl's Rick Ross.
Check out some of the following photos from the gallery on exhibition now, and be sure to check out more of Beckman's work here.

[RH First Look] Barney Bones: "The Barney Bones EP"
Barney Bones represents the turning of a tide on the West Coast, at least when it comes to hip-hop music. Kendrick Lamar at once gave resurgence to, and forever changed the sound of rap music that emanated from the left coast with his lyrically confounding, omnipresent tales of watching the violence that his predecessors had illustrated happen around him. On his debut project, fellow South Central native Barney Bones is the solution to the equation K Dot+soul beats=X. His flow is at once poetic while being abrasive enough to spike raised eyebrows and rewinds with ease, covering subject matter that deals with more than how many bands can make her dance. The album opens with Barney reeling from a reverie, rhyming "Last night I had dreams that turned into screams". It is the sort of initial statement that instantly holds the rest of the track to a higher standard and shows a kind of self-realiztion of one's own thoughts not often found until artists hit later years. The eclectic beats, ranging from ambient electro to heavy boom-bap call to mind an early Kid Cudi, furthermore when calling to mind Bones' ability to look deep within. I caught up with the artist for a few quick questions about The Barney Bones EP, check out the Q+A, as well as the full album streaming and available for download on the following page.
[Songs of the Day] 2/17/14 (Feat. Beyonce, Kanye West, PARTYNEXTDOOR & More)
There was a huge influx of new music over the weekend, and we're here to round it all up, organize it, and make it a little easier to sift through it all. Unless your head has been firmly buried in sand somewhere, you may have heard Beyonce dropped an unexpected album, the lead single of which ("Drunk In Love") has been burning up the radio waves and Internet. Everyone and their mother seemed to get on a remix of the Jay Z/Beyonce track as Diplo, Kanye West, T.I. & The Weeknd all highlighted a heavy dose of Bey. Weathering the "Drunk In Love" storm was Canadian product and OVO signne PARTYNEXTDOOR, who dropped off a new song in "Persian Rugs" and Trinidad Jame$, who celebrated Valentine's Day the way only he can, with a new record in "EtheREAL". Jeremih & Shlomo's latest track, "No More" got a remix from Boots and some EDM from Jr. Hi, who got Childish Gambino on "Trillion Girls" and Ellie Goulding who unveiled a new Skrillex track on her latest mix for BBC Radio 1. Kanye West made the list twice, with producer Hudson Mohawke leaking the original cut of "Bound 2" featuring Tyler, The Creator in Leeds over the weekend, Big Boi continued his series of "Mash-Up Mondays" with a new track in "Damaged World Mash-Up" which comes complete with animated visuals and Trash Talk & Flatbush Zombies got together for "97.92". From Honduras we got a fresh song in, "Ace" and The Trouble With Templeton showed up with "Soldiers". In other news, Treated Crew member Mic Terror teased his latest album, Fresh Prince of Darkness, with "Anti-Swag" featuring Taylor Bennett and The GTW of JODY fame dropped a dope little dance number in "Calling Cards". Check it all out, streaming below.

[Mixtape] Sulaiman: "Hook Line & Thinker"
Sulaiman is back with a fresh new tape to help his friends and family back in the midwest brave through (hopefully) the last few terrible months of winter. A few months back I found myself sitting and talking to Suli, discussing the new rise of the scene in Chicago, the jump-off of artists like Vic Mensa and Chance The Rapper and what it all means. Sulaiman stressed the thought process of artists coming from Chicago, the need to keep the talent flowing to make it a scene that rivals the coasts at the end of the say. The Treated Crew member has been in and out of the foreground of hip-hop, always a thinker and a lyricist. With that in mind, Hook Line and Thinker may just be one of the most appropriate album title in recent memory, certainly making more sense than Rick Ross's Mastermind.
Produced by Doc Da MindBenda and featuring Dally Auston, Gzus Piece and Keenan Coke, the seven-song Hook Line and Thinker is a boom-bap-ish lyrical playground, with Sulaiman going off for bars. It's a refreshing project that will certainly make people once again take notice of Sulaiman. Check out the latest from Chicago, available for stream/download below.
Photographer Duo Turns Annoying Potholes into Art
Photos by Photographer duo Davide Luciano and Claudia Ficca
Potholes are a driver's nightmare and with this Winter's cold wrath, it seems that they have multiplied in cities across the nation. While most of them go unfixed, Photographer duo Davide Luciano and Claudia Ficca managed to turn these annoying city potholes into works of art in their ironic photo series, “My Potholes".
The idea for this series was inspired from their individual experience after hitting a pothole in their own neighborhood in Montreal, an experience we city dwellers can all relate to. Eventually, the idea broadened into creating various imaginative scenes within the backdrops of New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal, where street cracks and potholes play a major role in the everyday commute. Each scene directly engages the street and the city, transforming the bad into good, creating surreal scenery while adding perspective on how we are connected and affected by the environment around us. It's definitely an interest concept.

[Video] 2014 Grammy Awards Performance Recap
While the awards may have left some excitement on the table, the performances of the 2014 Grammy Awards certainly did not disappoint. Jay-Z and Beyonce started things off with a rousing performance of their track "Drunk in Love" from her recent release that got the energy going in the Staples Center. Lorde performed her 2013 seminal track "Royals" to a certain degree of minimalism, sporting a darker new look and Pharrell and Daft Punk teamed up with none other than Stevie Wonder for a rendition of "Get Lucky" which went on to win record of the year and Kendrick Lamar linked up with Imagine Dragons for an inspired performance than skipped across songs, opening with "m.A.A.d City" which had at least two in the front row out of their seats. Alas, all the showmanship was thus in vain to the almighty Macklemore & Ryan Louis whose Teflon-esque evening continued into their live performance as they trumped the rest of the field by hosting 33 gay marriages onstage with Madonna. There's a lot you can do to create entertainment, but I have to say there's not much more than that. We rounded up the whole lot of Grammy performances and have them streaming here below for your viewing pleasure. Check them out and stay tuned to RH for continuing Grammy coverage.
