Wolverine and Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Post-Credits Scene Will Be an X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer

I have major beef with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Okay, maybe not with the films themselves, but with the ways Sony and Fox have been handling the marketing for each of the films, respectively.

First, Sony has been going completely overboard with their handling of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It was common knowledge for comic book/film fans that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was going to feature both Rhino and Electro in the film. However, Sony quickly spoiled the surprise of Green Goblin's presence with a half-assed revelation that Dane DeHaan would, in fact, portray the villain, complete with a radical makeover. Soon after the revelation, Sony announced their plans for a spin-off trilogy that would focus on the Sinister Six, six of Spider-Man's arch-nemeses united to take the wall crawler down. That's great, but why rush things not even two films into this newfound universe?

Meanwhile, Fox has been doing their part to ensure the universe they've built around the original X-Men trilogy would be as confusing as possible. X-Men: First Class was meant to be a retcon/reboot that altered some facts from the X-Men films, but then became the first part in a new X-Men trilogy that would lead into this summer's upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. Time travel films are very hard to handle, but when bringing the device into a franchise that already had a confusing backstory to begin with gives Fox the chance to alter things the way they want to while also paving the path for the third film in the trilogy, the already announced X-Men: Apocalypse. I kind of like what Fox is doing with X-Men, but the over-saturation of X-Men stuff over the past couple of weeks, from Carl's Jr. commercials to sharing the film's first fight sequence to the 2938238th trailer is just overkill.

Now, waters are being muddled as it's being reported that The Amazing Spider-Man 2's post-credits scene will feature a scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, fanboys will want to keep their pants on, as this isn't a sign of a crossover between the two studios/properties, but a marketing ploy between Sony and Fox. Variety's reporting that the existence of an X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2's credits is due to a pre-existing contract Marc Webb made with Fox Searchlight to shoot another film with the studio following the success of (500) Days of Summer. However, the director opted to make The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Fox agreed to let Webb out of his contract, but only if Sony would advertise X-Men: Days of Future Past for free, thus leading to an otherwise unnecessary promo for a film the majority of movie audiences would already go see.

In a perfect world, Disney would buy out Sony and Fox's Marvel properties and bring them all under the Marvel Films umbrella. However, the odds of that happening are very, very slim for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, if you're expecting something much more substantial in regards to a post-credits scene with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, your bubble has officially been burst.

[Video] The Amazing Spider-Man 2 "Enemies Unite"

Following last week's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Super Bowl teaser, Sony released a full-on video detailing Electro's (Jamie Foxx) origins, as well as a look at Dane DeHaan's take on Harry Osborn. The video, entitled "Enemies Unite," focuses mostly on Electro, but also hints at a unified villain group backed by Oscorp (as was mentioned with the announcement of a planned "Sinister Six" series of spin-off films). There are only a few more months until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theaters!

Following in the grand tradition of Super Bowl TV spots, Sony has released the teaser for their The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Super Bowl trailer. While it clocks in at a paltry 30 seconds, the new clip features new footage from the film, including a harrowing Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) crash through a glass roof, as well as a peak at the the Rhino suit, donned by Paul Giamatti (Sideways). It might not be as long as the first trailer, for obvious reasons, but it's still exciting to watch. Hopefully, the narrative won't take itself way too seriously and continue painting its version of Peter Parker as a lonesome skater.

Be sure to watch out for the full Super Bowl TV spot this Sunday, and catch Spider-Man swinging into theaters on May 2nd.

Spider-Man spin-off films Venom, Sinister Six announced

Well well well... Marvel goes and creates the most successful film in history with The Avengers, which itself was a culmination of a number of other films, now every studio holding a superhero property want to duplicate the success by creating their own film universes that will bring in the cash flow. Look at the huge mess that is DC and WB's Batman vs. Superman, Fox is creating retroactively creating a unified X-Men universe, and now Sony has confirmed their own intentions (and my own suspicions) of expanding on the The Amazing Spider-Man universe.

Last night, Sony confirmed their intentions to create a series of Spider-Man spin-off films, the first of them focusing on Venom and the Sinister Six. As I mentioned in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer post, the hints and rumors of the Sinister Six's involvement in subsequent films has been confirmed. It appears that "The Amazing Spider-Man 4" could very well be focused on the Sinister Six's gallery of Rhino, Kraven, Mysterio, Lizard, Electro, and Doctor Octopus.

As of right now, Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), who's confirmed to write the Daredevil Netflix series, is set to write/direct The Amazing Spider-Man 4/Sinister Six. Alex Kurtzman (co-writer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2Star Trek Into Darkness) will be directing the Venom spin-off. Obviously, the two proposed films are years away, so it's far too early for casting news. Unfortunately, with the expansion of the Spider-Man universe, it appears to be even more of a stretch for there to be one cohesive Marvel universe where Disney Marvel's superheroes (The Avengers, et al) could coexist with the Sony Marvel (Spider-Man) and Fox Marvel (Fantastic Four, X-Men) universes. One day, true believers...

[Trailer] The Amazing Spider-Man 2

[youtube id="nbp3Ra3Yp74"]

Earlier this morning, the first official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 debuted online, and what a trailer it is. Moving away from the unnecessary teen angst from the original The Amazing Spider-Man, this new sequel finds a more mature, more experienced Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) acknowledging his responsibilities. However, when a powerful conflict arises not only in the form of the supervillain Electro (Jamie Foxx), but of a unified conflict driven to take him down, he realizes just how dangerous his new line of work truly is.

Just as the triptych posters prematurely revealed the Green Goblin yesterday, the trailer features the new Green Goblin's debut, as well as the trilogy's new Harry Osborn, Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings). I'm a bit disappointed that they opted to go for the "extreme" look for the Goblin similar to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 version of the villain, but that's just minor nitpicking for an otherwise exciting trailer. The official synopsis for the film implies that OsCorp is behind all of the superpowered beings, running akin to the Ultimate Spider-Man narrative, but also creating a unified universe of villains. If rumors are true, subsequent films will eventually introduce the Sinister Six, a group of supervillains made up of Spider-Man's most iconic adversaries.

For now, we'll settle with Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Green Goblin, and Electro. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be in theaters on May 2nd, 2014.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 triptych posters reveal Green Goblin

While Electro (Jamie Foxx) has been confirmed as the main villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (complete with a rumored subtitle to boot) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti) was meant to be nothing more than a lesser arch-nemesis, the recently released triptych of new posters for the film have revealed a recently unannounced villain: the Green Goblin. Each part of the poster features a specific villain in the film, but it's surprising that Sony would choose to reveal the Green Goblin in such a manner when there was no mention of his involvement in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 previously. With Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings) making his franchise debut as Harry Osborn, one could assume that he'll be heading the Green Goblin mantle; however, as adaptations like to alter story elements, this Green Goblin could be an entirely new person.

Nevertheless, you can see the triptych in full and in its individual parts as well as five new stills from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the gallery below.

Unused costumes for The Amazing Spider-Man have surfaced

The costumes used in the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy weren't all that good... in fact, they were pretty terrible. The Marc Webb-directed, Andrew Garfield-starring reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, showed off a sleeker, sporty design that had some interesting variations, but looked too much like an "extreme" take on the classic blue and red suit. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (The Rise of Electro?) will be debuting its first official trailer next week. With all of the hype surrounding the film set to explode, a relic from the past has been unearthed detailing three different costumes that were ultimately turned down for the one Garfield donned in 2012.

The costumes are rendered in 3D CGI, so they look more metallic than they actually would have in the film. However, they still share a very distinct armor-like quality that takes away from Spider-Man's everyman charm. Or, you know, as much "everyman charm" that he could have outside of his superpowers. The first of the costumes, which you can see in the gallery below, features the underarm webbing that Spider-Man debuted with back in the '60s mixed with a Venom-like chest piece. The second costume makes the red more dominant than the blue. The third looks very armor-like, yet the most reminiscent of the costume ultimately used in the film.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 thankfully returns the wall crawler into an almost exact replica of his classic costume, a move I can most definitely get behind.

Will The Amazing Spider-Man 2 be subtitled "The Rise of Electro"?

A new post on the official viral site for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was published recently hinting at the origins of the film's main antagonist, Electro. The post, stylized as a newspaper story for The Daily Bugle, the headline reads, "Hydroelectric Towers Set To Light Up NYC," confirming that the aforementioned towers were being constructed by Oscorp Industries. Oscorp, as you may or may not know, is the science company behind the spider that gave Peter Parker his powers. You can see the post here.

More importantly, it's being reported that, at least in foreign territories, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will officially be titled The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Rise of Electro. Adding subtitles to films in foreign territories isn't an uncommon practice. However, it would be interesting to see whether or not Sony decides to include the subtitle to the film's domestic release, keeping in line with the Disney and Marvel films' practices (Thor: The Dark WorldCaptain America: The First Avenger, et al). Does the subtitle really affect the film? No. However, it could be one tiny step closer to maintaining a consistency across all Marvel properties, regardless of which studio is in charge of them.
