[Weekend Box Office] Godzilla Storms to the Top

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continued its surprising box office plunge, falling into third place this weekend with $16.8m, bringing its domestic total to a subpar $172m. Last weekend's top film, my self-described comedy of the year, Neighbors, fell to second place with $25.9m. Topping the box office is Godzilla's return to the big screen with a huge $93m. Despite receiving a mixed reaction from critics (including a super harsh review from our very own Alex Katz), the strong showing guarantees more to come from Gareth Edwards and company. The weekend's other big release, the Jon Hamm-led Million Dollar Arm, brought in $10.5m.

You can check out the rest of the weekend box office numbers below.

1. Godzilla - $93,205,000

2. Neighbors - $25,991,350

3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $16,800,000

4. Million Dollar Arm - $10,511,000

5. The Other Woman - $6,300,000

6. Heaven is For Real - $4,400,000

7. Rio 2 - $3,800,000

8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $3,759,000

[Weekend Box Office] Neighbors More Amazing Than Spider-Man

In a shocking turn of events at the box office this weekend, the Seth Rogen-led raunchy comedy Neighbors overtook The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as the highest grossing film this weekend. It's rare for a superhero blockbuster to falter in its second week, but that's exactly what happened to good ol' Spidey. Could it be a sign of audience's fatigue towards comic book films, or it is a testament to the film's quality? Whatever the case may be, it doesn't bode well for the Sony film, especially with the American Godzilla remake coming out next weekend.

However, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that Neighbors sold well. I called it the comedy of the year back at SXSW, but I didn't know it would have performed so well against Spider-Man. If you haven't seen the film yet, I highly recommend doing so; Zac Efron definitely has shed his Disney past and has become an amazing actor over the past few years, and his performance in Neighbors will attract any Efron detractors.

The Other WomanHeaven is for Real, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier fill out the rest of the Top 5. This weekend's other major release, Legends of Oz, performed poorly with a $3.7m intake. The animated "sequel" to Wizard of Oz was anticipated to have a solid return, especially with its star-studded cast made up of Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Belushi, Martin Short, and others, but may struggle to break even with its $70m budget.

You can read the rest of this weekend's box office numbers below.

1. Neighbors - $51,070,425

2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $37,200,000

[Weekend Box Office] The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Webslings to the Top

Marvelous May officially kicked off this weekend with the US release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While it fell just short of matching Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95m debut with $92m, the sensational Spider-Man sequel still slammed the rest of the competition, with the second place The Other Woman coming in at only $14.2m. Heaven is for Real continues its upswing into third place with $8.7m, while the aforementioned Captain America film came in 4th with $7.7m.  With its solid American debut, worldwide totals for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have surpassed more than $360m and should continue its reign at the top of the box office for the next few weeks before it faces some serious competition from another Marvel-related film property, X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Film still of Kate Upton and Leslie Mann in The Other Woman

[Weekend Box Office] The Other Woman Tops Captain America

Finally, Captain America's reign at the top of the box office has been put to half mast thanks to the powerful female wit of Kate Upton, Cameron Diaz, and Leslie Mann a la The Other Woman. The film opened at a resounding $24.7m to take the weekend box office crown from the aforementioned Marvel film. Heaven is for Real was able to just barely squeak past Rio 2 with a $13.8m take over the latter's $13.6m. Johnny Depp's Transcendence did anything but, falling two spots to 6th with a paltry $4.1m. However, The Other Woman's reign will more than likely be short-lived with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opening this weekend.

You can read the rest of this past weekend's box office numbers below.

1. The Other Woman - $24,700,000

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $16,048,000

Transcendence Movie Still

[Weekend Box Office] Johnny Depp's Transcendence Falters at the Box Office

Captain America: The Winter Soldier topped the box office yet again with a solid $26.6m showing. Rio 2 wasn't too far behind with a respectable $22.5m. The Christian-slanting Heaven is for Real raked in a very surprising $21.5m, attracting both the religious crowds and pro-Easter audiences. The weekend's other two new releases, however, had subpar performances with the horror film spoof A Haunted House 2 only making $9.1m and the Johnny Depp-led Transcendence netting only $11m.

The biggest letdown of the weekend is the aforementioned Transcendence, marking Depp's second box office blunder in a row following last year's The Lone Ranger. I haven't yet seen Transcendence, and while I'm at least intrigued by the film's premise, I can understand the "Johnny Depp" fatigue. After all, I've spoken out heavily over Depp's casting choices, wanting more of an acting performance from him instead of portraying wacky caricatures.

You can check out the rest of this weekend's box office numbers below.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $26,612,000

2. Rio 2 - $22,500,000

3. Heaven Is For Real - $21,500,000

4. Transcendence - $11,150,000

5. A Haunted House 2 - $9,100,000

6. Draft Day - $5,900,000

7. Divergent - $5,750,000

8. Oculus - $5,202,000

9. Noah - $5,000,000

10. God's Not Dead - $4,801,218

[Weekend Box Office] Captain America Clips Rio 2's Wings

Once again, Captain America reigns triumphantly at the top of the box office this weekend. Newcomer Rio 2 posed a viable threat to the superhero film, but was vanquished by a late $2m push by the patriotic Steve Rogers. I don't doubt or question Marvel Films' viability at the box office, but as I've pointed out numerous times in the past, family-friendly children's films always perform exceedingly well; a Rio 2 #1 opening definitely wouldn't have been out of the question. As it stands, Captain America will fly atop the box office for another week. This weekend's other major release, the horror film Oculus, opened to a respectable 3rd spot. With the Johnny Depp-starring Transcendence opening this week, I predict another week of Captain America at the top, unless Rio 2 finds some wind beneath its wings.

The rest of this weekend's box office numbers are below.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $41,398,000

2. Rio 2 - $39,000,000

3. Oculus - $12,000,000

4. Draft Day - $9,750,000

5. Divergent - $7,500,000

6. Noah - $7,450,000

7. God's Not Dead - $4,485,000

8. The Grand Budapest Hotel - $8,050,000

[Weekend Box Office] Captain America Saluted at the Box Office

In a surprise to nobody, Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier topped domestic box offices this weekend with a resounding $96.2m opening, making the film's release the largest April release in history. What's more interesting is the film's international gross, surpassing the $207m mark this weekend. For a film so deeply rooted in American patriotism, it's surprising to see Captain America perform so well overseas.

Ever since Marvel Studios officially began producing their own films with 2008's Iron Man, the studio has been on a box office tear, with each subsequent film generating millions, if not billions, in returns. Analysts have noted the The Avengers effect, which has shown to help every Marvel film released since 2012's The Avengers, and that effect has been as clear as day, with Iron Man 3Thor: The Dark World, and now Captain America: The Winter Soldier raking in the big bucks following the superhero team-up film. Of course, the real test for Marvel, as I've been saying for over the past year, is whether or not Guardians of the Galaxy can make as much at the box office as the aforementioned films have.

In other box office news, Noah dropped to the second spot with a $17m weekend, which was a dramatic downturn from last weekend's $44m showing. Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel climbed a spot to 5th with $6.3m, while 300: Rise of an Empire completely fell out of the Top 10. This weekend's openings include the family-friendly Rio 2, the NFL-related Draft Day, and the horror film Oculus. However, the biggest news is that The Raid 2: Berandal expands to more theaters this week; I implore every single one of you to catch The Raid 2 this weekend. Trust me, you won't regret it.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $96,200,000

2. Noah - $17,000,000

3. Divergent - $13,000,000

4. God's Not Dead - $7,726,000

5. The Grand Budapest Hotel - $6,300,000

6. Muppets Most Wanted - $6,285,000

7. Mr. Peabody and Sherman - $5,300,000

8. Sabotage - $1,908,000

9. Need for Speed - $1,836,000

10. Non-Stop - $1,827,000

[Weekend Box Office] Noah Sails to Top Spot

After a minor break in the action, Weekend Box Office is back, and what a week to return to. Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic, Noah, debuted in the top spot despite Paramount Pictures' worries about the film's reception from religious groups. Perhaps the supposed "controversy" surrounding the film's artistic reimagining of the Biblical Flood, buoyed by positive critical reviews, is what helped the Russell Crowe-led film to a resounding $44m. This weekend's other big release, the David Ayer-directed (End of Watch), Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring Sabotage opened to a dismal $5.3m, landing in 7th place.

The weekend's two other limited release films, Diego Luna's Cesar Chavez and Gareth Evans' The Raid 2: Berandal, didn't place in the Top 10. The Michael Pena-starring Cesar Chavez did end up in 12th place with $3m while opening in 664 theaters, however. The Raid 2: Berandal, meanwhile, was only released in a handful of theaters, but will be getting a rollout release over the next few weeks and should track well amongst the 18-34 male audience.

1. Noah - $44,000,000
