[Weekend Box Office] Frozen freezes The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

A week after flirting with the top spot, Disney's Frozen has overtaken The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in the weekend box office, making $31.6m. Catching Fire fell to second place with an even $27m. It's no secret that there's a special power about animated children's films that will always overtake the box office. The allure over kids is real in Hollywood. Last weekend's new release, Out of the Furnace, follows in third place with $5.3m. Expect these standings to be all mixed up this weekend with the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. [Weekend Box Office] Catching Fire won't be caught Frozen

For the second week in a row, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire topped the weekend box office with another $74.5m showing. However, it received strong competition from Disney's animated film Frozen's $66.7m. Following in third place is Thor: The Dark World with $11.1m. The Jason Statham and James Franco-starring Homefront opened to a solid $6.97m over the holiday weekend, placing it in 5th place. With Out of the Furnace the only wide release this week, Catching Fire should continue to reign over the box office. However, if word of mouth spreads over Frozen, I can see it overcoming the film this weekend.
