[Weekly Netflix Fix] Huge May Update includes Kill Bill

May 1st is here, and with it comes a huge Netflix update. Kaiju fans will notice all of the amazing classic Godzilla sequels like Godzilla vs. Mothra, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster. Anime and video game fans will want to take note of the film sequel to one of my favorite video games ever, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

However, the biggest highlight of the week are Quentin Tarantino's seminal Kill Bill, vol. 1 and 2. While I haven't seen Kill Bill, vol. 2 in years, I've always held Kill Bill, vol. 1 high on my list. Granted, it's no Reservoir Dogs or Inglourious Basterds, but it's still a great kung fu exploitation film from one of pop culture's best and smartest exploitation directors. [Weekly Netflix Fix] Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson Shine in Don Jon

This week's edition of the Weekly Netflix Fix has a few gems, definitely overshadowing last week's somewhat paltry additions. The amazing street culture/Banksy documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, has returned to Netflix. The Shia LaBeouf-led Charlie Countryman is also available. Keen readers will remember I praised the cinematography, but the film ultimately didn't live up to its promising premise. Cartoon Network's Camp Lazlo!, the spiritual successor to Rocko's Modern Life by creator Joe Murray, also entered the Netflix fray. However, this week's biggest draw is Joseph Gordon-Levitt's spectacular directorial debut, Don Jon, and my personal recommendation for this week.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Watch Short Term 12 Immediately

Netflix had another sizable stream of updates this week, with the majority of the new additions coming from various Cartoon Network series. Everything from great shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Boondocks, and The Venture Bros. to less-than-great shows like Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Johnny Bravo make up a sizable portion of the new Netflix titles. Some choice films added this week are Scoop and Wrong Cops, as well as the "Should I or Shouldn't I Watch This?" film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

However, my personal recommendation for this week is the film Short Term 12, one of the best films of 2013 (that didn't make my best of 2013 list only because I didn't get a chance to see it). The film, written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is an independent drama about a supervisor (Larson) at a foster care facility for at-risk teenagers. As supervisor, she has to gather up the strength and courage to help all of the teenagers living there, despite having her own personal demons she must contend with. Short Term 12 was nominated for and won a plethora of awards during its festival run, and serves as a break-out role for Larson. If you can only watch one film on Netflix this weekend, it better be Short Term 12.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Insidious Chapter 2 Highlights a Weak Update

After last week's onslaught of film and TV additions, this week's Netflix updates are notably paltry and not very interesting. Insidious Chapter 2 is the main highlight of the week, especially if you're a fan of the original Insidious or love horror films. There's a documentary called When Jews Were Funny that examines Jewish comedy in the entertainment industry that sounds super interesting. I know fans of stand-up will want to check out D.L. Hughley's Reset special. Weird, niche film fans might enjoy Iron Sky: Director's Cut, which is, as you may have guessed, the Director's Cut of Iron Sky, an alternate reality film that introduces a world where Nazis didn't die out in World War II, but simply relocated to the moon.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Amores Perros, Mean Girls Highlight New Additions

After months of consideration, I've finally pulled the trigger on providing weekly Netflix Instant updates. After all, I always wonder what's new on Netflix myself, so this is like killing two birds with one stone. Thankfully, I chose a great week to begin the Weekly Netflix Fix, because the past week saw dozens of titles added to Netflix. Some of my personal recommendations include Amores Perros, Bob's Burgers Season 3, Lars and the Real Girl, Mean Girls, Rocky I - V, and Terminator.

It's about time Mean Girls found its way to Netflix. Say what you will about Lindsay Lohan's downfall, but Mean Girls was a shining moment not only for her and for the rest of the cast (Hey, Lacey Chabert), but also Tina Fey's writing career and general acclaim for female-driven comedies. Hell, just last week, a close friend of mine told me she thinks she has ESPN. Bob's Burgers inclusion is self-explanatory: If you're not watching Bob's Burgers, you're missing out on one of the best animated shows on-air right now. Rocky I-V and Terminator are also self-explanatory. Amores Perros, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, 21 Grams), is actually the first film in the Death Trilogy that also includes the two aforementioned films. The film is told through three interconnected vignettes that are tied together narratively by a car accident, and thematically by each vignette's characters' relationships with the dogs around them. It's gripping and infinitely better than Babel. Lars and the Real Girl, my left field suggestion, will be expanded on another time...
