[Weekly Netflix Fix] City of God Anchors Long List of Additions

New month, new films and TV shows added to Netflix. There are an amazing amount of additions to Netflix Instant for July, including some critically-acclaimed films. My personal recommendation is City of God, a 2002 film about organized crime in Rio de Janeiro that follows the rise of Lil Ze, a young neighborhood kid to ruthless and sinister drug dealer, and Rocket, another neighborhood kid who follows a separate path by becoming a photographer and reporting on the crime taking over Rio.

Other notable additions include 12 Angry Men, Boyz N the Hood, Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke, Rugrats in Paris, and My Girl. You can find the full list of new July additions below.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] I Hope You're a WWE Fan

There isn't much new worthwhile to watch this week. If you're into the WWE, a few 2013 highlight documentaries (are they even considered documentaries?) have been added, as well as a spotlight on Shawn Michaels' WrestleMania career and an "Ultimate" look at The Ultimate Warrior's legacy. Beyond that, not much else was added that's worth noting. I guess Disney's Tarzan animated film where he would "slide" across tree moss would be fun for younger kids? I don't know. Here's hoping next week's additions will be meatier and worthwhile.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Don't Watch Spike Lee's Oldboy

The title says it as clear as day: Don't watch Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy. Even though it was recently added to Netflix Instant this week, even though Spike Lee's name still carries some type of status, even though Park Chan-wook's Oldboy was an instant classic, none of this means you should waste your time watching the 2013 remake. Trust me. Hell, even with a horrid English dub (which is what Netflix Instant has right now), you're better off watching that than the Hollywood remake.

If you're looking for something new to watch, there's the surprising World War Z film adaptation (which has little to do with the book it was based off of), the third season of Elijah Wood's Wilfred, and the seventh season of Doctor Who for all of those weird Doctor Who fans out in the world. Anything is better than watching Spike Lee's Oldboy. If none of these pique your fancy, you're better off re-watching Orange is the New Black all over again, maybe revisiting Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, or Bob's Burgers instead of watching Spike Lee's Oldboy.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Watch Orange is the New Black ASAP

If you haven't watched the second season of Orange is the New Black yet, what are you doing with your life? The second season of the Netflix-exclusive series has been the perfect follow-up to last year's surprise hit season of the show. The odds have been increased, the story lines have been more engrossing, and the new additions to the cast have been absolutely amazing. Of course, if you're as big of an OITNB fan as many already are, you've already finished plowing through the new season. What's there to watch now? To be honest, there isn't much to be gleaned from the past week's additions. Some of the classic Muppet films were added in case you're looking for a shot of nostalgia. Bronies might be excited to see that the fourth season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic makes its Netflix debut. Outside of that? Well... you just might want to re-watch OITNB over and over until next summer's third season release.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] First Update for June is a Huge One

The beginning of the month means Netflix adds a plethora of amazing films and TV shows to their Instant Video library. No matter your tastes or interests, there's bound to be something you'll enjoy in this substantial update. Personally, I can't wait to revisit the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman-led Sherlock, a modern re-telling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. Francis Ford Coppola's intense Vietnam War-set epic, Apocalypse Now, returns to the service alongside the Director's Cut of the film, Apocalypse Now Redux. Jim Jarmusch's collection of vignettes, Coffee and Cigarettes, makes an appearance (side note: one of my favorite lines in a film, "You're Bill 'Groundhog Day, Ghostbustin' ass' Murray," comes from Coffee and Cigarettes). Korean director Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy, consisting of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, also return to the service. The sorely underrated Adam Sandler drama Reign Over Me is another highlight.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] 30 for 30: Bad Boys Added

After a few weeks of questionable updates, Netflix comes with a strong collection of new titles this week. My personal recommendation for this week comes in the form of ESPN's 30 for 30: Bad Boys, the latest installment in the sports network's outstanding line of sports documentaries. Bad Boys tracks the rise of the '80s Detroit Pistons, anchored by Isaiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer. Other highlights this week include the very divisive anime, Kill la Kill, Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills, and the rogue DIY film shot in Disney Land, Escape from Tomorrow.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Dear Mr. Watterson is This Week's Highlight

Calvin and Hobbes means so much to a lot of people, myself included, so when I noticed Dear Mr. Watterson, a documentary made out of care and passion over Bill Watterson's strip, it was the first thing I watched that day. It wasn't that long ago when Dear Mr. Watterson made the crowdfunding rounds, so it's great to see its addition to Netflix Instant where so many more people can be introduced to a great doc, and perhaps the strip itself, for the first time. Other highlights from this week's additions include Star Trek Into Darkness and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
