[RH Photos] Anamanaguchi (Live at Lincoln Hall 5/25/2013)
Last Friday, popular chiptune band Anamanaguchi released the video for their latest single, "Endless Fantasy." As someone who was marginally aware of them, I found myself replaying the video over and over throughout the day, then found myself attaining a ticket to their show at Lincoln Hall the next day. I took some photos of Anamanaguchi while their fans dancing and crowd surfed to the band's noted video game sound-effect laden instrumentation. I actually had a lot of fun amidst the stage setup complete with flashing neon-colored lights and animated 8-bit sprite GIFs It definitely was a different change of pace to the hip hop shows I've spent the past year attending.

WHITE-OWL: "WAX TRAP VOL. 3 (TURNT UP EDITION)"
A month ago, we introduced the world to 100Trill, a duo formed between Grade Aplus and MikeJaxx, with their song "'93." Over the past month, the duo have added a third member, WHITE-OWL, to fulfill their wishes to bring a full hip hop experience where the DJ is an equal part of the equation. WHITE-OWL, whom some might recognize as Cadillac Duke's DJ, has over a decade of turntable experience under his belt. He's also not against scratching, which I personally consider to be a lost art of DJing.
"WAX TRAP VOL. 3 (TURNT UP EDITION)" is a good example of WHITE-OWL's DJing abilities. He chops together everything from The Pharcyde's "Passing Me By" to a trap remix of "Suavamente," in the mix. You can check it out below, and if you find yourself getting "TURNT UP" to WHITE-OWL's mix, you can catch him DJing a set this Saturday at Beau Monde's "Inside the Vault" art show featuring art from Know Passion, Lefti, Derrick Baker, Robert Bank, and my LOD brother ABC Kills.
Disclosure: "You & Me" (feat. Eliza Doolittle) (Toro y Moi Remix)
Toro y Moi was introduced to me by ShowYouSuck through his remixes of various songs from the artist's Artist in Return album (with the "Cola" remix being my favorite of the drops). Recently, Toro y Moi released a remix of his own, this time taking Disclosure's "You & Me" and giving it the experimental, laidback sound that the talented artist is known for. What results is a chopped mix full of dance and electronica beats.
You can check the remix out below.
[Mixtape] ShowYouSuck: "The Essentials"
Over the Memorial Day weekend, something magical happened. Ruby Hornet staple (and my new LOD brother) Auggie the 9th assembled a primer of essential ShowYouSuck songs for a mixtape simply named The Essentials. The mixtape consists of various songs throughout ShowYouSuck's early, yet already illustrious career spanning his One Man Pizza Party trilogy and the Girls Girls Girls EP with Stefan Ponce.
If you've constantly found yourself late to the pizza party, The Essentials is the perfect way to catch yourself up to speed with ShowYouSuck's sonic shenanigans. If that doesn't entice you enough, the cover art features the Green Ranger swagging out Lord Zedd's throne (or at least I think it's Lord Zedd's throne; I hope I don't lose street cred if I'm wrong).
ShowYouSuck will be supporting Alex Wiley's Club Wiley release on June 6th at Lincoln Hall with Taylor Bennett, Kembe X, Caleb James, St. Millie, and JeanDeaux. You can download The Essentials here.
The Weekly Swarm: 5/20 - 5/26
How's everybody's Memorial Day weekend going so far? I hope everybody's spent their Sunday reuniting with the Bluth family with Netflix's release of Arrested Development season 4. Or maybe you're all celebrating with Chance the Rapper at his two sold-out Chicago shows at The Metro? However you're spending this holiday weekend, stay cool and safe. We had a great week here at Ruby Hornet; Microsoft debuted their next console, Xbox One, Action Bronson dropped his amazing video for "Strictly 4 My Jeeps," Chuck Inglish pulled the curtains back for his EP, Droptops, I reviewed the weekend's top box office film, Fast & Furious 6, and we had two amazing Chicago music videos drop in JDott Trife's "Homicide" and the long-awaited "La Clika" by Scheme. You can check out all of this and more below.

[Mixtape] The Jet Age of Tomorrow: "The JellyFish Mentality"
(Artwork by Matt Martians)
The Odd Future camp has been busy this week with Earl Sweatshirt releasing "Guild" with Mac Miller while also performing an EarlWolf set with Tyler, the Creator during this week's Jambalaya Fest in Texas. Today, the production team of Matt Martians (also part of The Internet with Syd the Kyd) and Hal Williams (Pyramid Vritra), The Jet Age of Tomorrow, have dropped their latest album, The JellyFish Mentality. The album features extra production from Syd the Kyd, SBTRKT, and Midtown Pat with vocal features from OF staples Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, Mike G, Domo Genesis, as well as OF collaborators Mac Miller, Speak, Casey Veggies, Kilo Kish, The Stepkids, Jesse Boykins III, and Vince Staples.
The Jet Age of Tomorrow stays true to its name with atmospheric, space-like beats. Considering it's the group's third release, following 2010's Voyager and 2011's The Journey to the 5th Echelon, The Jet Age of Tomorrow has a grasp on their signature sound. If you're not familiar with their past projects or The Internet, you might be surprised by the album's laidback and chill production; however, it's definitely a great alternative to the normal hip hop beats being made right now.
You can download The Jet Age of Tomorrow's The JellyFish Mentality here. You can stream the album and check out the album's back art and track list below.
[Video] Anamanaguchi: "Endless Fantasy"
We're all used to pizza parties, but I'm inviting you all to a different kind with the video for Anamanaguchi's new song, "Endless Fantasy." The video, the latest from the album of the same name, is an electronic trip full of good vibes through the streets of Williamsburg that results in a worldwide pizza party. I'm not into electronica (or dance music in general), but I can't deny the happy feelings Anamanaguchi makes me feel. For those unfamiliar with the group, Anamanaguchi is a chiptune band from New York City that makes music by sampling NES and Game Boy hardware (which is where the term "chiptune" comes from). Their music is guaranteed to make you want to surround yourself with blinking, brightly-colored objects and smile. I don't even remember the last time I smiled...
If you're interested in helping the band out, Anamanaguchi has a Kickstarter going (with nine days left as of publication) to help fund the Endless Fantasy album. Some fund rewards include USB drives, Endless Fantasy on 2xLP, limited edition playable NES cartridges inspired by the album's songs, and funding towards an Anamanaguchi vocal remix album (with an example including a Das Racist remix, to boot). Anamanaguchi will be performing at Lincoln Hall tomorrow, May 25th. Those looking to dance under the flashing lights can find tickets here.

[RH Review] The Arrested Development Documentary Project
Like a large number of people, I didn't take Arrested Development's cancellation well. To be fair, I preferred to catch the show on DVD rather than watch it during Fox broadcasts because of my personal preference of TV digestion (marathon viewings, no waiting, no commercials, captions); I admit, I was probably part of the problem that caused the show's untimely demise.
With a revival in the form of a Netflix-exclusive 4th season premiering this week, it's only fitting that The Arrested Development Documentary Project found its release this month. Directed by two self-admitted Arrested Development superfans, the documentary shares some insight on the history behind the series directly from various cast and crew, including Mitch Hurwitz, Ron Howard, and a majority of the cast, as well as a number of fans.
However, how well does the documentary fare compared to the numerous behind-the-scenes features on the series' DVDs.
Note: Due to prior commitments, only a portion of this film's review is displayed. The full review can be read here.
