[Trailer 3] Nymphomaniac
[iframe id="http://movies.yahoo.com/video/nymphomaniac-volume-1-trailer-223032729.html?format=embed&player_autoplay=false"]
Film seems to be getting racier in this day and age, and if a border-line porno is going to take the screen, it better be a damn good plot line for it to be in theaters. Along this route comes Lars von Trier with his what is being called "sexual romp of a film" Nymphomaniac, and following off of that statement, I guess I could feel a little bashful in my desire to see it. However, I like when a filmmaker doesn't shy away from what may make a film become controversial or potentially far more interesting, and I think the bold stance Nymphomaniac is about to take as a film will undeniably be a cinematic feat in itself.
Nymphomaniac is about a girl recalling her many sexual experiences to a man who saved her from being beaten to death. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg as the self-proclaimed nymphomaniac, the film features a lot of huge names such as Stellan Skarsgård, Uma Thurman, and Shia LeBeouf (unfortunately without a bag on his head). You can watch a clip of the upcoming film here.
The film is to be released on iTunes/OnDemand on March 6, 2014 and in theaters on March 21, 2014.
[Trailer] Joe
[youtube id="QbWjxlhmlu0"]
David Gordon Green looks like he's been bit by the indie drama bug once again. Following successive comedy films Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and The Sitter, last year's Prince Avalanche was a return to Green's indie roots. However, it's his next film, Joe, that might cement his status as one of the most talented indie dramatic directors.
Starring Nicolas Cage and Mud's Tye Sheridan, the film adaptation of Larry Brown's novel follows Cage's titular Joe, an ex-convict with an anger and aggression problem. When he catches wind of abuse caused by Gary's (Sheridan) father, he finds his rage rising once again. Joe is fodder for a dark and brutal tale of both revenge and redemption.
While Joe won't be in theaters on VOD until April 11th, it'll be screening at SXSW next month.
[Video] The Lego Movie blooper reel
The Lego Movie has been a critical and commercial success since its release last week. Netting close to $70 million in its opening weekend with a 95+% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating, The Lego Movie has proven to be a hit amongst moviegoers of all ages. Our very own Alex Katz, who has a soft spot for amazing animated films, gave the film a 9.5 in his review, calling the film "one of the smartest scripts for an animated movie that I’ve seen in ages." Simply put, The Lego Movie has been an abashed success, as I imagined it would be when the first trailer was released back in October.
Recently, a fun little blooper reel has been released to share some of the behind-the-scene fun the cast had during takes. As any good animated film is wont to do, the bloopers are fully animated with little visual cues adding to the humor. You can check it out below, and if you haven't seen The Lego Movie yet, head out into the world and discover its awesomeness.

John Singleton set to direct Tupac biopic
Back in 2011, John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) was set to direct a biopic on legendary rapper Tupac Shakur's life. However, he left the project due to non-public circumstances. Fast forward three years later, and the director has returned to the dream project. Tupac and film audiences may recall that Singleton and Shakur built a friendly rapport with one another when the director cast the rapper into the lead role in Poetic Justice and had planned to develop a fruitful working relationship with him. However, due to Shakur's untimely death, those plans were halted.
With Singleton back on the film, progress should be made on the long-gestating project. Last year, the film received financing, allowing pre-production to begin. Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, is also in full support of the film as an executive producer, ensuring the film will be as realistic and well-boding for the rapper's legacy and estate.
However, the question remains: Who should portray the late rapper? Let us know any of your dream casting choices!

Darren Aronofsky's cut of Noah will be released
Darren Aronofsky's films have all been met with critical acclaim, leaving audiences in awe with his compelling storytelling and focus on delivering character-led films that pull at audience's every emotion. His last film, 2010's Black Swan, was met with great reviews and a plethora of award nominations that reflected his talent. After a few missteps involving his attachment to, then eventual stepping back from The Wolverine, Aronofsky announced his next film would be the Biblical epic, Noah.
Aronofsky's telling of the story of Noah is taking many (many) artistic licenses, building it up as more of a science-fiction, superhero-esque film rather than the straight and narrow Western story of The Flood and The Ark. When you think about it, you wouldn't want anything less from the director, would you? Last week, it was announced the film's release in other markets would be given the 3D treatment, which isn't really necessary, but can be somewhat expected. What wasn't set in stone, however, was which cut of the film audiences would see.
There were many rumors about Paramount hiring various writers to edit the film's story to appease more religious audiences, to Aronofsky's dislike. However, after the various cuts were tested, Paramount decided to, in fact, go with Aronofsky's cut of the film. This is great news for film audiences, as we'll get to see the director's true vision of the film. It's also a great show of faith Paramount is showing Aronofsky, in spite of their attempts to undercut his work. Aronofsky had the following to say about his cut:
My guys and I were pretty sure that because of the nature of the film and how we work, there wasn’t another version. That’s what I told them … the scenes were so interconnected — if you started unwinding scenes, I just knew there would be holes. I showed it to filmmaker friends, and they said the DNA was set in this film.
Noah will be in theaters on March 28th.

[Teaser Trailer] The Purge: Anarchy
[youtube id="NwxDUqE9txQ"]
What would you do if all crime and illegal activity was made legal for 12 hours once every year? In last year's The Purge, this concept was explored by writer/director James DeMonaco. While it didn't do favorably well with critics, it was a box office success, almost making 30 times its budget. With the film's sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, it's going to be more of the same. As shown in this first teaser trailer, a young couple's car breaks down on their way home right when The Purge is announced. The film then follows their attempts to make it home safely while avoiding all of the degenerates, murderers, thieves, and bad guys.
Whether or not the film's any good, the franchise has already built a cult following, with my former self taking part in #CrimeDay tweets last year, illustrating all of the crimes I would commit if the country really had a Purge. The Purge: Anarchy will be attacking theaters on June 20th.
[Trailer 2] Transcendence
[youtube id="kLnafnNhOLo"]
Another trailer has landed for Wally Pfister's next sci-fi film, Transcendence. In case you missed the first trailer, the Johnny Depp-starring film features the wacky actor as a premier researcher of Artificial Intelligence. When detractors opposing his research in advancing the technology attempt to kill him and sabotage his work, his wife (Rebecca Hall) and best friend (Paul Bettany) save his life by uploading his mind into his most profound invention: a machine that combines all of mankind's intelligence with the ability to understand and express human emotions. However, his transcendence into this new being changes him as his newfound thirst for hunger and power threaten everything he worked towards.
Transcendence is looking really good. The film looks like it reins Depp in from his normally outrageous characters, which is something I've always wanted to see more of from the actor. Transcendence will be Pfister's directorial debut, but won't be his first Hollywood experience; he's worked as cinematographer on the majority of Christopher Nolan's most recent films, winning an Oscar for Inception.
April 17th is when the film will be in theaters.
[Trailer] The Fault In Our Stars
[youtube id="9ItBvH5J6ss"]
The fans of John Green, to the say the least, seem to be a cult of positive energy that revels with every creative work the Young Adult author puts out onto the market. With a YouTube collaboration that he puts out with his brother and a variety of novels for teens to devour in the course of a few days, the man's sensation is only expanding from here.
The Fault In Our Stars has been adapted into a film starring Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters. Hazel is a teenage girl battling cancer and attached to her oxygen tank at all times, while Gus rocks a prosthetic leg in remission. Meeting in a cancer support group, the two become caught up in one another as they embark on a journey of love that is guaranteed to be a tear-jerker.
The Fault In Our Stars has been adapted by Scott Neustadter and Michale H. Weber, both of whom are known for their works (500) Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now. It was directed by Josh Boone.
The film will be released in theaters on June 6, 2014.
