Treated Tribe

Treated Crew x Stüssy x Saint Alfred: "Treated Tribe"

Treated Crew, a collective based in Chicago, has joined forces with both Stüssy and Saint Alfred to collaborate on a project involving a new selection of apparel and a mixtape. The collection and the mixtape are both referred to as Treated Tribe. The apparel is modeled by Pusha T (with photos by Jesse Lirola), and is heavy in print, text, and graphics.

The “Treated Tribe” clothing collection mainly consists of black and white colors with a paisley print that is reminiscent of the crew’s logo, Treated Crew’s artwork for their album TreaTed, and Stüssy’s own signature branding. The simple arrangement of black and white statement pieces appropriately captures a vital essence of each party involved in the collaboration, a fundamental vibe that can be described as straightforward and versatile.

The artwork done for the album Treated Tribe reflects some of the predominant patterns used in the collection of apparel. Contributors to the mixtape include Mic Terror, Mano, Hollywood Holt, Gzus Piece, Jon James, Saint Millie, He Say/Say She, Sulaiman, Max Wonders, A.K., Nick Junior, HighLife, Lee Majorz & PST Saint.

The clothing collection dropped at Saint Alfred’s on Saturday, May 31st. Although the local boutique has already sold out, the Treated Tribe collection hit Stüssy’s online shop on June 2nd and is still available there for purchase. [Mixtape] Justin Rose: "RoseWaVve Vol. 1"

Late last year we profiled New York City product Justin Rose as part of our First Look series. At the time, the 23-year-old producer was hard at work on his debut, while also finishing work on frequent collaborator Kris Kasanova's project. Today, we finally get the product of that hard work as Rose's follow up to last year's release, 22kt: The Instrumental Tape, RoseWaVve Vol. 1 hit the net today with a premier on his own website, Rsgldthewrld.com. The latest features Rose both producing on the back end of the tracks and gracing the songs with his own flow. Tearing down the wall between producer and rapper can be a tightrope job, but Rose does it admirably here. On "Fear and Loathing" Rose transitions between rhyming in a variety of cadences while also helping on the hook. Here he sounds like what I believe Chief Keef might have been had the lean and bad decisions not gotten to him, with a wavy feel to it. Kasanova links up with him on "On It (How 2 Make It In America)" for what is a kick back in itself. The production alone is something to take note of as well. "Moving Tho" is an airy alternative r&b beat that floats off with a dreamy guitar line. The waves are certainly present here and Rose's latest is not to be missed. "Party4Me" is a potential club banger with huge drums paired with a clever hook and interesting inverted guitar riffs, showing the project can straddle several situations.

As artists across the country are coming up with more talents at their disposal, Rose's latest project proves he can hang with the best of them in this stepping out from the boards.  Hit the link below to get the free download for the project and keep an eye out for much more to come from Justin Rose.

Barney Bones

[RH First Look] Barney Bones: "The Barney Bones EP"

Barney Bones

Barney Bones represents the turning of a tide on the West Coast, at least when it comes to hip-hop music. Kendrick Lamar at once gave resurgence to, and forever changed the sound of rap music that emanated from the left coast with his lyrically confounding, omnipresent tales of watching the violence that his predecessors had illustrated happen around him. On his debut project, fellow South Central native Barney Bones is the solution to the equation K Dot+soul beats=X. His flow is at once poetic while being abrasive enough to spike raised eyebrows and rewinds with ease, covering subject matter that deals with more than how many bands can make her dance. The album opens with Barney reeling from a reverie, rhyming "Last night I had dreams that turned into screams". It is the sort of initial statement that instantly holds the rest of the track to a higher standard and shows a kind of self-realiztion of one's own thoughts not often found until artists hit later years. The eclectic beats, ranging from ambient electro to heavy boom-bap call to mind an early Kid Cudi, furthermore when calling to mind Bones' ability to look deep within. I caught up with the artist for a few quick questions about The Barney Bones EP, check out the Q+A, as well as the full album streaming and available for download on the following page.

[Mixtape] #100Trill: "Muzik 2 Check Yo B*tch 2"

The Chicago duo, #100Trill is back with their latest project, Muzik 2 Check Yo Bitch 2 just in time for that special time of year. Treated Crew and LOD affiliates Mike Jaxx and Grade Aplus continue to push quality music at a fast pace, logging long hours at Kimball House Studios on the city's northwest side. M2CYB2 has been in the works for a minute, and the fourteen song tracklist (including bonus tracks) is the perfect soundtrack to a very certain kind of Valentine's Day. Grade Aplus proves that the more you do something the better you get, with a crisp delivery and varying flows that accent Jaxx's production well throughout. According to Grade, "This is the creation of 2 niggas who's big brother's raised them on Death Row Albums. We really just had fun, most of the album is just the normal shit we'd talk amongst each other, just set to a beat." The project also features a who's who in the Chicago scene, with St. Millie, ShowYouSuck, Gzus Piece and more making appearances. "I had fun working with a couple of producers as well as all of my favorite Chicago artists," said Jaxx. "This project solidifies me as a true artist, I feel. We just some playa ass out west niggas that love to talk shit and put art behind it." Check out the project below.

[Mixtape] Isaiah Rashad: "Cilvia"

Among one of the most talked about young artists in the game right now, TDE's latest signee, Isaiah Rashad, offered up his latest project, Cilvia today with a free stream on Spotify. The project comes as the hip-hop world anxiously awaits label-mate Schoolboy Q's upcoming Oxymoron project, and closely follows a disappointing Grammy Awards for TDE flagship artist Kendrick Lamar. Cilvia, which hit the net today, is the first full project we've heard from Rashad since joining the TDE imprint and continues to showcase the immense talent that the collective has been able to garner and develop over the past few years en route to being one of the premier labels in the game. The project has a healthy dose of fellow recent TDE appointee SZA, as well as a rousing performance from Chicago-bred newcomer Jean Deaux, who has quietly been establishing herself on the west coast. Jay Rock and Schoolboy also hop on the ride out track, "Shot You Down". With Ab-Soul also preparing his full-length, expect TDE to continue its hip-hop reign, on every level of the rap spectrum. [Album] St. Millie: "Road To Glory"

Chicago native St. Millie has been slowly growing his name and brand within the burgeoning scene around him for some time now, releasing a host of projects that have endeared him to a local college and young adult market while establishing himself. Today, we get the latest from St. Millie in the eleven track project, Road To Glory, mixed by Elton Chueng at Classick Studios. The project is a mark of growth for the 22-year-old Columbia College student who can more often than not be found hanging around Jugrnaut in the city's South Loop. The project is a hometown affair with production coming from fellow Treated Crew member Nasim Williams, fellow Columbia student Thelonious Martin, THEMpeople and Von Vuai, among others. Overall, it's a cohesive, flowing project that laments on critical issues while keeping the tension at ease with well-placed tracks. St. Millie literally had his face plastered all over the city as wheat pastings of his face with a crown were pinned to walls across the city. With Road To Glory he's hoping to move beyond those walls. Check out the full stream/download below.

Stream Kitty Cash's Latest Mix for SSENSE

Last month, when I had a chance to catch up with up and coming New York City DJ Kitty Cash on the heels of her well-received Love The Free mixtape she expressed her eagerness to get right back to work after having finished one project. "As soon as I was done, I was like, 'Damn, I can’t wait to work on part two'." Well, we got the latest from Kitty Cash last night as she continues to craft interesting and ear-catching mixes, this time for the likes of SSENSE. The piece of work brings together elements of airy 808s and features the likes of Kanye, Tinashe, Tamia, Sade and Beyonce to help you chill out while hiding indoors from the polar vortex. [Mixtape] Dally Auston: "The Westside EP"

Chicago's Dally Auston, part of the vaunted SaveMoney clique that has been steadily making their impact felt on the larger Chicago hip-hop scene and nation-wide over the past year, has been quiet since the summer when he dropped the critically-acclaimed project The Wood back in March of last year. Whereas The Wood took Auston from being known amongst hip-hop heads in the city to hitting the blogosphere and gaining recognition outside the city, The Westside EP stands to do much more for the 19-year-old artist, allowing him an opportunity to take advantage of his city and his colleagues' current position in the national picture.
Recorded over a lengthy period of time at The Music Garage in the city's West Town neighborhood, with production from Doc Da MindBenda, Ongaud, Smoko Ono and more, Dally's latest is a distinct overture from his last offering, demonstrating a growth both lyrically and musically that takes from many different influences, blending them beautifully into a cohesive work. The West Side is known for the 'bopping' craze that has taken over the neighborhoods that make it up and few do it better than Auston, who provided a project in The Westside EP that can make you want to dance and think all at once. Check out the latest from Dally Auston, streaming below.
