Film still of Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

[Video] New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Clip Shows Glimpse of Splinter

Everything's falling into place for Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Last week, the film's first promotional posters were revealed that highlighted each turtles' weapons. Then, of course, there was the trailer that revealed the turtles' nostrils and Megan Fox looking very... foxy, for once. Now, the hype train continues as the first TV spot for the film was shown last night. While it recycles some of the same footage found in the trailer, including the attempt at comedy in the trailer's final seconds, it does feature some new scenes, including a glimpse at the turtles' master, Splinter.

This super short clip heightened my expectations for the film, especially since it showcased some more action scenes that I felt the trailer sorely lacked. With the announcement of Johnny Knoxville voicing Leonardo, I'm hesitant to get excited for the rest of the cast. We'll see how everything turns out come August!

[Weekend Box Office] Captain America Clips Rio 2's Wings

Once again, Captain America reigns triumphantly at the top of the box office this weekend. Newcomer Rio 2 posed a viable threat to the superhero film, but was vanquished by a late $2m push by the patriotic Steve Rogers. I don't doubt or question Marvel Films' viability at the box office, but as I've pointed out numerous times in the past, family-friendly children's films always perform exceedingly well; a Rio 2 #1 opening definitely wouldn't have been out of the question. As it stands, Captain America will fly atop the box office for another week. This weekend's other major release, the horror film Oculus, opened to a respectable 3rd spot. With the Johnny Depp-starring Transcendence opening this week, I predict another week of Captain America at the top, unless Rio 2 finds some wind beneath its wings.

The rest of this weekend's box office numbers are below.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $41,398,000

2. Rio 2 - $39,000,000

3. Oculus - $12,000,000

4. Draft Day - $9,750,000

5. Divergent - $7,500,000

6. Noah - $7,450,000

7. God's Not Dead - $4,485,000

8. The Grand Budapest Hotel - $8,050,000

9. Muppets Most Wanted - $2,193,000

10. Mr. Peabody & Sherman - $1,825,000

A montage of George Lucas' art

George Lucas' Lucas Cultural Arts Museum Might Come to Chicago

Say what you will about Rahm Emanuel's questionable tactics and style of shaping Chicago, but one thing is clear: the man has big plans for Chicago as an arts and entertainment destination. I don't want to get too into politics here, but Emanuel has shown that he's focused on heightening Chicago's scope as a city fully embracing all forms of art very recently. Just last month, he was in Austin, TX to attend SXSW with a team to identify the framework of how the festival works to bring a similar Film, Music, and Tech festival to the Windy City within the next year or two.

Now, the next potential piece of the puzzle may be falling in place for the city. Star Wars and Indiana Jones creator George Lucas originally had plans to build the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum, a proposed $300 million museum to house vintage Lucasfilm memorabilia (including a scale model of the Millennium Falco!), in San Francisco. However, the plans have fallen through. Now, Lucas is heavily considering Chicago for the new site for the museum. This also reflects Lucas' growing appreciation for the city, which has become his part-time home after marrying Chicagoan Mellody Hobson last year. The director has also put his money where his heart is, donating $25m to both the University of Chicago Lab Schools and After School Matters last year. Lucas had this to say about plans for the proposed Chicago museum: "The city of Chicago has enthusiastically welcomed me and I consider Chicago to be my second home [...] I look forward to working with community leaders to see if Chicago can become home to the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum."

Emanuel has put together a task force to find a proper site for the museum, which will also display Lucas' art collection. I personally am all for Chicago becoming the destination for the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum. However, Chicago politics might prevent this from happening. We'll keep our eyes open on any developments as they come.

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Insidious Chapter 2 Highlights a Weak Update

After last week's onslaught of film and TV additions, this week's Netflix updates are notably paltry and not very interesting. Insidious Chapter 2 is the main highlight of the week, especially if you're a fan of the original Insidious or love horror films. There's a documentary called When Jews Were Funny that examines Jewish comedy in the entertainment industry that sounds super interesting. I know fans of stand-up will want to check out D.L. Hughley's Reset special. Weird, niche film fans might enjoy Iron Sky: Director's Cut, which is, as you may have guessed, the Director's Cut of Iron Sky, an alternate reality film that introduces a world where Nazis didn't die out in World War II, but simply relocated to the moon.

Check out all of this week's new additions below, and be sure to check out Alex's Netflix Pix tomorrow for more!

  • All Things to All Men
  • Aurangzeb

Mae Whitman

Mae Whitman in Talks to Star as The DUFF

I have a lot of guilty pleasures that I don’t really share with many people, and I must say that NBC’s Parenthood falls under that category. It’s a show that probably has a hold on me due to my ability to relate the Braverman family’s antics to those of my own family’s. However, there is one person from the show that I absolutely adore more than most other people in Hollywood, and that is the young, talented Mae Whitman. While she may hold a pretty successful role in the show, she is currently in negotiations with CBS Films to star in their latest comedy The DUFF. A tale adapted by Josh A. Cagan from Kody Keplinger’s novel The D. U. F. F., Whitman will be playing Bianca, a 17-year-old high school senior whose life is rattled when she finds out that her friends refer to her as the Designated Ugly Fat Friend (DUFF). The discovery of her supposed friends kind words drive her to team up with fellow “DUFFs” and bring down the school’s evil queen.

Whitman has been great at playing these coming of age high school roles. She’s best known for playing Ann Veal on Arrested Development and in the popular teen movie The Perks of Being A Wallflower. The film is expected to be shot in Atlanta this summer. The young actress may not be a household name just yet, but I think that the world is going to be seeing a whole lot more from Mae in these upcoming years.

Tony Jaa in The Protector 2

[Video] RZA and Tony Jaa Brawl in The Protector 2 Clip

The trailer for The Protector 2 featured Muay Thai, real-life Sagat Tony Jaa kicking ass... lots and lots of ass. While the film has been available on iTunes and On Demand for some time now, it'll be receiving a theatrical release on May 2nd. To help build up some extra hype for its big screen debut, a new clip has been released featuring Jaa brawl with the one, the only, The RZA.

It's no secret that The RZA has been a huge fan of martial arts films, but now he's getting his hands dirty, portraying the main antagonist in The Protector 2. He might not be as technically proficient as most other action stars, but there's a certain level of entertainment to see The RZA go toe to toe against Tony Jaa, one of action films' best current martial artists.

Enjoy the clip and catch The Protector 2 in theaters on May 2nd. If you're jonesing for more RZA on Jaa action, you can find the film on iTunes and On Demand right now.

Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

[Video] Extended Look at Guardians of the Galaxy's Star-Lord

After seeing Captain America: The Winter Soldier this past weekend, I walked out of the theater a bit underwhelmed. That's not to say the film wasn't good, but it didn't really take any risks. Guardians of the Galaxy, however, represents Marvel Studios' biggest challenge since the imprint started producing their own films. The team isn't exactly full of household names, and the space setting is vastly different from what's been established in prior Marvel films (even more so than the Thor films' Asgard). However, I think it's a gamble that will pay off exponentially for the company this summer. Following the film's first trailer, this first clip is an extended look at the opening scene featuring Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. There isn't much new footage in this clip, but it offers up enough to satiate anybody's curious interest.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be in theaters on August 1st.

Megan Fox as April O'Neil from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

First Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Posters Revealed

The closer we get to August, the more hype builds up for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Just last week, we found out that Jackass star Johnny Knoxville was cast as the voice of Leonardo, and now we have the first promotional posters for the film. The teasers highlight each Turtles' weapon of choice bathed in their corresponding color. They're not exactly the greatest posters, but anything TMNT-related is sure to feed the frenzy, even if the Turtles have nostrils...

Rumors circulated last week that the film would be delayed past its scheduled August 8th release date, but as these posters make clear, the date is still being targeted for release. As much as I like film marketing as crunch time grows tighter, I still would like to know who's being cast to voice the other three Turtles instead of seeing more film stills and posters. Priorities, guys!

Anyways, enjoy the posters in the gallery below, as well as a look at Megan Fox as April O'Neil in the header. Don't even get me started on her use of a PowerShot camera instead of a proper dSLR...
