Godzilla Director Gareth Edwards Directing First Star Wars Spin-Off

We only recently received news of who'll be starring in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII. Since then, we've gotten a steady in flux of information, from the start of production to yesterday's announcement of the Star Wars: Force for Change initiative. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they announced their intentions to release annual Star Wars films following Episode VII's release. Disney has further cemented their annual film regimen by confirming the existence of at least three spin-off films to follow Episode VII. While speculation over what the films will cover is still out with no plot information, Disney and Lucasfilm announced the creative duo for the first planned spin-off film coming in 2016. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards and The Book of Eli screenwriter Gary Whitta will be teaming together for the first post-Episode VII spin-off with an already set target date of December 16, 2016. You can read the announcement below.

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year’s smash hit Godzilla.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Japanese Godzilla Fans Think the American Godzilla is Fat

If there's one negative stigma foreigners have about Americans, it's the notion that we're overweight. Considering our fairly large percentage of overweight citizens, it's a fair assumption to make. It's funny, then, to see reactions from overseas when it comes to a foreign property being appropriated by and for American audiences. Enter: Japan.

Reception for the upcoming Godzilla film has been pretty positive and optimistic, buoyed perhaps by its stellar cast of Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Ken Watanabe. However, the brief glimpses of Godzilla itself has been pretty mixed. Japanese fans have been very vocal about the Americanization of their beloved kaiju, targeting the monster's physical appearance to task.

/Film, The Hollywood Reporter, and Japan Today all shared some of the comments made by Japanese fans, some of which are pretty hilarious. "He got fat in America on cola and pizza," wrote one fan via Twitter. "Where's his neck?" wrote another. One of the best comments reads, "[E]ven Godzilla has metabolic syndrome these days..."

Fat or not, this new incarnation of Godzilla will be smashing into American theaters on May 16th.

[Trailer 4] Godzilla

Earlier this week, the international trailer for Gareth Edwards' reboot of Godzilla was released. Building off of the hype and excitement of the previous trailer in which glimpses of the kaiju's latest iteration was briefly seen, the new footage showcases the amount of chaos expected in the film. If the Matthew Broderick-led 1998 Godzilla film still has you reeling over the potential of a legitimately good Hollywood Godzilla film, Edwards' iteration should be enough to wash away any lingering distaste from that mess of a project. Take, for instance, the beautiful cinematography in this new trailer. With a star-studded cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen, Godzilla should hopefully represent the successful reboot of an American-made Godzilla franchise. Fingers crossed for this one.

[Contest] Win a $15 Fandango Gift Card and Snickers

Going to the movies is fun and all, but sometimes it can get pricey. Once the tickets are purchased, you wonder if it's even going to be worth paying for the popcorn later. While some cave in and buy their snack, others are left in the theater listening to the harmonies of the others munch away at their snacks. This can lead to extreme hunger that turns some into a monster, perhaps into the infamous Godzilla.

Snickers wants to change that for you. They believe that Godzilla can be pretty great as long as his hunger is taken care of, and so they want to give one lucky person the chance to win a $15 Fandango gift card and five Snickers bars to enjoy throughout your next show. And with the new Godzilla movie coming out in theaters May 16th, there would be no better way to enjoy your prize earnings.

Entering this contest is really simple. First, follow @RubyHornet on Twitter, tag us in a tweet saying you want to win with the hashtags #RHSnickers, #MONSTERSATISFACTION, and the URL back to this specific post. Winners will be announced on March 17 by us! A simple example would be. "I think some #RHSnickers would fill my #MONSTERSATISFACTION! @RubyHornet http://rubyhornet.com/contest-win-15-fandango-gift-card-snickers/#.UxS4YvRdUuo." Be creative with this!

Regardless if you win or not, Godzilla will be a great start to the Summer film season and worth watching. Starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olson, and Sally Hawkins, it's a remake that I think will be the topic of discussion for a good portion of time after its release. Hopefully you'll have some awesome prizes to enjoy, and good luck to you all!

New Havoc-Wreaking Godzilla Poster

It's been awhile since the second trailer for the Godzilla reboot was released back in December, and while information has been light on director Gareth Edwards' reboot of the popular kaiju/monster movie franchise, expectations are still high for the film. Earlier today, a new poster was released showcasing all of the terror and havoc the Japanese monster wreaked upon a city.

Honestly, this is a light post, because there's only so much that can be said about a new poster release without diving deep into speculative analysis. Still, the poster is pretty amazing, with the focus rightfully put on Godzilla itself and not on any of the human cast, despite the large, talented names attached, such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Elizabeth Olsen (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad).

We're less than three months away from Godzilla's theatrical release. Are you ready?

This summer's Pacific Rim was Guillermo del Toro's love letter to kaiju films, as well as a re-introduction to the genre that Godzilla/Gojira paved the path many, many years ago. With Pacific Rim simply setting the tone for public awareness of kaiju, the Gareth Edwards reboot of Godzilla will shatter expectations and show us all how it's properly done. After a trickle of hints and teases since the summer, the first official look at the new Godzilla has dawned upon us today.

Starring Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Aaron Johnson (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), and Elizabeth Olsen (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), the reboot plays out more like a horror film akin to Cloverfield (sans first-person perspective). The official synopsis for the film says Godzilla will be put up against other kaiju threats to protect humanity. None of that is shown here, hopefully being withheld until future footage appears.

For now, enjoy the new trailer for the Godzilla reboot! It'll be in theaters on May 16, 2014.

[Trailer] Godzilla

We've all seen the cartoon glimpse at the all-new, all-rebooted Godzilla, but today gives us our first real look at the mother of monster movies. The teaser trailer for the Gareth Edwards' take on Gojira shares a hint at the new Godzilla. There are still no plot details, but any footage is good footage. It's good to hear the familiar Godzilla screech, even if it has been altered a bit.

The Godzilla reboot is currently scheduled for a May 16, 2014 release. Until then, you can get your kaiju film fill with Pacific Rim.

First look at new Godzilla film's poster

The reintroduction of the kaiju genre in mainstream American cinema began last week with Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim release. While the film underperformed at the box office, I still contend that it's one of the better summer movies to have come out thus far. With San Diego Comic Con taking place this weekend, a litany of geeky films will be making their public premieres. One such film is the anticipated American remake of the classic Godzilla.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters), the upcoming Godzilla remake is slim on the details, but features an amazing lineup of actors including Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), and Ken Watanabe (Letters from Iwo Jima). With famed writer/director Frank Darabont (The Walking DeadThe Green Mile) attached as one of the screenwriters, you already know that this reboot of the Godzilla franchise will have a lot of hype leading up to its 2014 release.

The poster, which you can view in full below, constructions broken down buildings set to resemble the famed monster. Obviously, Godzilla won't be made up of buildings, but the poster hints at just how fun and destructive the film will be. I'm already excited to see more; hopefully SDCC will reveal the first look at the monster herself or, better yet, some actual footage.
