Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

[Weekend Box Office] Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Flopped Hard

To say I'm shocked would be an understatement. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's follow-up to 2005's Sin City was supposed to be a guaranteed box office success. With the Eva Green areola poster controversy, the addition of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the GIFs of Jessica Alba gyrating, how could it not print money? Yet somehow, someway, the film bombed hard, making only an estimated $6,477,000 in ticket sales this weekend. To give a little perspective, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For screened in 2,894 theaters, making an average of only $2,238 at each one. That's embarrassingly abysmal for a sequel to a film that made almost $160m during its initial run. With a debut this low, the odds of the film turning a profit are slim to none.

In other box office news, Guardians of the Galaxy overtook the top spot from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' run by making $17.6m over the latter's $16.8m. The Chloe Grace Moretz tearjerker, If I Stay, came in third with $16.3m, with Let's Be Cops and When the Game Stands Tall making $11m and $9.1m, respectively, to round out the top five. You can check out this weekend's full box office numbers below.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy - $17,631,000

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $16,800,000

3. If I Stay - $16,355,000

4. Let's Be Cops - $11,000,000

5. When The Game Stands Tall - $9,100,000

6. The Giver - $6,730,000

7. The Expendables 3 - $6,600,000

8. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - $6,477,000

9. The Hundred-Foot Journey - $5,562,000

10. Into the Storm - $3,800,000

[Red Band Trailer] Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

The first word that always comes to mind with Sin City is "style." The latest red band trailer from last weekend's San Diego Comic Con for the upcoming Sin City sequel, A Dame to Kill For, is full of nothing but style. What the latest three minute trailer lacks in clear exposition, it makes up for in the CG-assisted neo-noir/graphic novel look fans have come to expect from the Sin City brand. Also very apparent is co-director Robert Rodriguez' penchant for creating prolific B-movie shots. Despite the budget, the CGI, and the very talented cast of actors, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For gives off a huge B-movie vibe, which is not a bad thing by any means.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will be in theaters on August 22nd.

Everything from animated GIFs to racy character posters have characterized Sin City: A Dame to Kill For's marketing strategy up to this point, but nothing beats seeing brand new footage of the film. Today, the latest trailer for the film was released and further contextualizes the film's narrative that features Jessica Alba, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, and Eva Green. As has been mentioned in the past, A Dame to Kill For is made up of four vignettes (three based on co-director Mark Millar's graphic novel of the same name plus an original story) that focuses on a specific set of characters. The trailer does a great job to highlight each vignette equally without spoiling too much narrative contained within them.

However, the biggest draw to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is how visually sound the film is. The high black and white contrast style just oozes with character. If you thought the first Sin City looked amazing, A Dame to Kill For blows it right out the water. Kind of fitting, considering the subject matter, no? Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will be in theaters on August 22nd.

The MPAA Thinks This Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Poster is Too Sexy

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For just exudes sexiness, whether it's Jessica Alba gyrating in an eternal animated GIF loop or how tantalizingly bloody the film's looked in the footage that's been shown so far. Sin City, both the graphic novels and the films, are just too hot for some to handle. Apparently, the MPAA falls into the latter category, as they've banned the Ava/Eva Green character poster that was meant to be included with the five other character posters released last week. Thanks to the internet (and my absentmindedness), I'm sharing the full collection of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For character posters below, including the aforementioned Eva Green poster alongside the more tame Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Rosario Dawson, and Jessica Alba posters.

As for the MPAA's ruling, the block comes from the poster's “ nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.” Honestly, they have a valid reason to block the poster. Of course, the MPAA is working with the studio to find a way to censor the poster so that it can be delightfully displayed in theaters across the country. I'm sure it'll take nothing more than a quick Photoshop blur. For now, enjoy what we've been shown below.

New Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Animated GIFs

A few weeks after the latest trailer for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was released, six new animated GIFs have been sent out to promote the film's upcoming release. GIFs have become a now-standard form of media thanks to the rise of Tumblr, Twitter, and general internet memes. I'm just thankful the studio made a GIF of Jessica Alba sexy dancing. Thank you, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. Short post, but when it comes to Jessica Alba, it's best to just get straight to the point, right?

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will be in theaters in August.

The first Sin City film was a graphic novel film adaptation dream, sticking heavily to Frank Miller's writing and artistic style. Relying heavily on green screen to create a selective black and white noir tone, Sin City was a landmark for director Robert Rodriguez's already illustrious career. The sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, has been in the works for years, and with its August release date approaching, footage is slowly being released to give fans an appetizer of what to expect in this next go-around.

This new TV spot for A Dame to Kill For follows last month's first official trailer for the film and is a quick run-through of what's to come. The cast has been beefed up exponentially with newcomers Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Don Jon), Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Eva Green, Jeremy Piven, and more alongside familiar Sin City actors Josh Brolin, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, and more. Much like Alex said previously about the first trailer, A Dame to Kill For will be primarily based on Miller's book of the same name, but will also feature some original shorts made specifically for the film.

If the delay from last October to this August didn't completely destroy you, find solace knowing that the extra months of post-production will mean the film will look as amazing as it should. Remember: August 22nd is when we can all become super cool noir characters and re-enter the world of Sin City.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is delayed until August 2014

In a surprising turn of events, the upcoming Sin City sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has been pushed back almost a year from October 2013 to August 2014. No official word has come out explaining the delay, but I'm assuming it's due to extensive post-production work necessary for the green screen shot film. It's terrible news for fans of both the original Sin City film as well as fans of Frank Miller's comics, but the extra production time should help with the film's use of special effects. I'm sure a more official reason will come out shortly, but for now, audiences can trust that director Robert Rodriguez (Machete) will do everything in his power to ensure the delay is worthwhile.
