[Weekly Netflix Fix] Mid-October Update
We're at the halfway point for October, and with it comes the next huge Netflix Instant update. There isn't much of substance in this latest update, though. DC Announces Full Slate of Films Through 2020
During a shareholder talk yesterday, Warner Bros. laid down the plans for their slate of DC films, revealing many previously rumored and unannounced films.
The first in line is Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which will be out in theaters in 2016. Following that film is Suicide Squad, a team of supervillains used by the government to perform black ops tasks in exchange for commuted prison sentences, will also be released in 2016 and directed by End of Watch and Fury director David Ayer. In 2017, Gal Gadot will spin off her portrayal of Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with her own standalone film. Justice League: Part One will also hit theaters in 2017 with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Amy Adams confirmed to reprise their roles and Snyder directing. The Flash will make his big screen debut in 2018 with The Perks of Being a Wallflower standout Ezra Miller portraying the speedster. Jason Momoa will also portray Aquaman in the standalone Aquaman film in 2018. 2019 will mark The Rock's debut in the DC universe in Shazam, followed by Justice League: Part Two. Finally, 2020 will feature the debut of Cyborg and Ray Fisher portraying him and the reboot of Green Lantern.
Certainly, the next six years are packed with superhero films from both Marvel and DC. Again, I've always pitched my flag on the Marvel side of things, but with names like Ezra Miller and David Ayer on WB's side, I can't help but feel excited for these newly announced films. I'm sure a ton of information, leaks, and rumors will come out in the months to come, so stay tuned.

HBO is Cutting the Cord, Offering Cable-Free Subscriptions in 2015
“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO." - HBO Chairman and CEO Richard Plepler.
For somebody who hates downloading stuff illegally, I've missed out on a lot of amazing TV shows because of my lack of HBO. Sure, I could borrow HBO Go logins from friends (and have honestly attempted to), but I never went through with them. I've gotten caught up in the Game of Thrones hype, yet I've never actually seen an episode, I, too, want to see dragons and nudity and sword thrones! But alas, without a cable subscription (or even a normal TV subscription due to my recent move this summer) or money to throw down on the Game of Thrones DVD/Blu-ray sets, I was resigned to waiting until the series hit Netflix Instant.
However, in a move that has been rumored for a couple of weeks, HBO has finally come to their senses and announced their intentions to offer HBO to users who don't have an HBO cable subscription. By their count, there are 80 million homes in the United States that don't subscribe to HBO, and it's this demographic that the company is hoping to attract with their announcement. No concrete details, such as pricing, limitations, etc. were revealed.
What should be noted is how this announcement will affect pre-existing relationships with service providers like Comcast and DirecTV. Surely, they won't be too thrilled that HBO is taking their service into their own hands. However, I'm sure there are provisions in place that will continue to offer cable subscribers incentives (exclusive shows, cheaper rates?) that non-cable subscribers won't have. Of course, this is all just speculation, but we'll hear more information as the weeks follow.

Captain America 3 Inspired by Civil War, Robert Downey, Jr. Returning as Iron Man
Finally, Marvel's largest comic book event in the past decade, Civil War, is getting the film treatment. The months-long event featured Captain America and Iron Man butting heads over the "Superhuman Registration Act" in which Iron Man argued those with super powers must register themselves and their identities with the US government in order to be covered for any liabilities following an accident in which Stamford, CT was decimated. Captain America fought against the legislation, arguing that it infringed upon superhumans' civil liberties/secret identities. The feud split the superhero community into two, those on Cap's side and those on Iron Man's side, with Spider-Man playing a central role in the whole ordeal.
On the film side of the news, this extends Robert Downey, Jr.'s contractual obligations to Disney/Marvel, as well as the size of his wallet. Given that he'll play a central role in the film, Variety is reporting the actor will receive $40m for the role PLUS benefits if the film outperforms this year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Variety also reports that Marvel and Downey, Jr. butted heads over the actor's salary, even going so far as to potentially have Iron Man written out of the plot entirely. However, given the nature of the film and the precedence it'll set for Marvel's Phase 3 films, Stark/Iron Man's participation was central to the litany of films that will follow the fallout of the the Civil War-inspired storyline.
What's more, this lends credence to the rumors that Marvel is looking into a partnership with Sony to have Spider-Man crossover into their universe. Again, given his large role in the Civil War storyline, it's almost necessary for the character to appear. The film isn't scheduled for release until May 2016, so we'll definitely have a lot more about the film, its cast, and any changes that may be made to adapt the storyline to the big screen soon enough.

Fox Might Be Developing X-Men TV Show
While the box office is where the real money is, many studios are embracing the TV format for various comic book properties. The Batman-related Gotham's series premiere a few weeks ago brought in 8.21m viewers, Netflix and Marvel recently revealed the logo for Daredevil (the first of four TV shows to exclusively premiere on the service), Brian Michael Bendis' Powers will be released exclusively on the PlayStation Network this December, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had its ups and downs, but further expands upon the lore of its Cinematic Universe, and we all know how successful The Walking Dead has been since it premiered four years ago. These shows help represent cheaper, faster returns for the studios as opposed to producing one film every x amount of years. That's not to say that each series' quality is any less than what we catch in theaters, of course. Nevertheless, TV is becoming the perfect landscape for serial storytelling, and with the growth and success of comic book properties in the past 10 years, it makes sense for more adaptations hitting the small screen.
That brings us to the new rumor that 20th Century Fox is preparing to develop a live-action X-Men show. Recently, it was confirmed that the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, will mark the final entry in the trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class and was continued by this summer's Days of Future Past. The film is currently slated for a May 2016 release, which gives Fox two years to develop the rumored X-Men TV show to further continue the mythology and universe established in the X-Men films.
What do you think? I, for one, would love to see a live-action X-Men TV show, so long as it was handled correctly.

[Weekend Box Office] Gone Girl Tops Annabelle in Close Race
When the first trailer for Gone Girl was released in April, we knew it was going to be a huge hit. After all, a mystery/thriller directed by David Fincher and starring Ben Affleck is not only guaranteed box office success, but critical acclaim and inevitable Oscar nominations. While the film topped the box office this weekend with a $38m opening, it surprisingly went head-to-head with Annabelle, the horror film prequel to last year's The Conjuring, which made a close $37.2m. I caught Annabelle on Saturday and wasn't too thrilled about it. I imagine Gone Girl will continue to top the box office for awhile.
You can check out the rest of this weekend's box office numbers below.
1. Gone Girl - $38,000,000
2. Annabelle - $37,200,000
3. The Equalizer - $19,000,000
4. The Boxtrolls - $12,425,000
5. The Maze Runner - $12,000,000
6. Left Behind - $6,850,000
7. This Is Where I Leave You - $4,000,000
8. Dolphin Tale 2 - $3,530,000
9. Guardians of the Galaxy - $3,034,000
10. No Good Deed - $2,500,000
