Still from Space Jam

[Video] Space Jam Live-Read in Los Angeles

Space Jam is the greatest film ever made. If you disagree, you're not a connoisseur of life's finer things. With that said, there's been a whirlwind of Space Jam news recently, from the fake 30 for 30 documentary of the film to the very false rumors of a sequel starring LeBron James. Now, a video has come out from Funny or Die that captures the essence of the film with some contemporary actors and NBA players.

Last month, a live table read of the film's script was held in Los Angeles, and Funny or Die was present to shoot video of the event. The read was full of who's who in comedy right now, such as The League's Nick Kroll and Paul Scheer, Neighbors' Jerrod CarmichaelFamily Guy's Seth Green, Boy Meets World's Danielle Fishel, and A Million Ways to Die in the West's Ralph Garman. Joining them were Los Angeles Clippers players DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin reading for Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan, respectively.

Film Still of Brie Larson in Short Term 12

[Weekly Netflix Fix] Watch Short Term 12 Immediately

Netflix had another sizable stream of updates this week, with the majority of the new additions coming from various Cartoon Network series. Everything from great shows like Aqua Teen Hunger ForceThe Boondocks, and The Venture Bros. to less-than-great shows like Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Johnny Bravo make up a sizable portion of the new Netflix titles. Some choice films added this week are Scoop and Wrong Cops, as well as the "Should I or Shouldn't I Watch This?" film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

However, my personal recommendation for this week is the film Short Term 12, one of the best films of 2013 (that didn't make my best of 2013 list only because I didn't get a chance to see it). The film, written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is an independent drama about a supervisor (Larson) at a foster care facility for at-risk teenagers. As supervisor, she has to gather up the strength and courage to help all of the teenagers living there, despite having her own personal demons she must contend with. Short Term 12 was nominated for and won a plethora of awards during its festival run, and serves as a break-out role for Larson. If you can only watch one film on Netflix this weekend, it better be Short Term 12.

Film still from The Raid: Redemption

Plot Details for the American Remake of The Raid: Redemption

The Raid: Redemption was a breath of fresh air when it was released unceremoniously in 2011. After all, there isn't usually much fanfare when a small, low-budget Indonesian martial arts film comes Stateside. However, once word spread about how amazing the film was, it quickly gained steam, allowing writer/producer/director Gareth Evans to begin filming The Raid 2: Berandal. Of course, when a small foreign film finds success of any kind, especially when that's legitimately great, it was only a matter of time before a Hollywood studio would snag the rights for an American remake. Such is what happened with The Raid: Redemption awhile back.

Back in February, The Expendables 3 director Patrick Hughes was tapped to helm said American remake of The Raid: Redemption, a move I'm not too thrilled about; then again, I'm not too thrilled about American remakes of foreign films to begin with (re: Oldboy). In an exclusive interview with Coming Soon, Hughes shared some plot details for the remake that isn't too far off from the original, as well as the tone of the film:

We have a really, really interesting take on that film," Hughes told us. "One thing, obviously the original just blew my mind and I was fortunate enough to catch up with Gareth Evans in LA at the premiere of 'The Raid 2.' The thing that blew my mind with that film was the aesthetics and the fight sequences but also the simplicity of the premise, and there's so much you can do with that. So our take on it is really interesting and I feel like if anything what I want to do is elevate the emotional aspect of it, and I think those are my favorite action films of all time when you can balance the action and the emotion, and what he did with his first 'Raid' was phenomenal..

Certainly, we're not there to recreate that film beat for beat, with the set up we're following a DEA task team, which was implemented by the Bush administration after September 11th when they realized that terrorism and the drug trade were so closely aligned. So they set up a DEA task team that's six units and they work across borders and sort of act like Navy SEALS. You never read about it, you never hear about it, but they go on these missions. So that's a really interesting take and a really nice premise and also what's interesting on this take on it is the clash of cultures and the clash of martial arts, the fighting styles, which is something that's going to be a lot of fun when we've really started pre-vizzing stuff.

Hughes is saying all of the right things, but it's too early to cast judgment. For now, catch The Raid 2: Berandal in theaters (it's playing where you live, trust me!), and we'll see how The Expendables 3 fares when that hits theaters on August 15th.

Wolverine and Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Post-Credits Scene Will Be an X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer

I have major beef with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Okay, maybe not with the films themselves, but with the ways Sony and Fox have been handling the marketing for each of the films, respectively.

First, Sony has been going completely overboard with their handling of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It was common knowledge for comic book/film fans that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was going to feature both Rhino and Electro in the film. However, Sony quickly spoiled the surprise of Green Goblin's presence with a half-assed revelation that Dane DeHaan would, in fact, portray the villain, complete with a radical makeover. Soon after the revelation, Sony announced their plans for a spin-off trilogy that would focus on the Sinister Six, six of Spider-Man's arch-nemeses united to take the wall crawler down. That's great, but why rush things not even two films into this newfound universe?

Meanwhile, Fox has been doing their part to ensure the universe they've built around the original X-Men trilogy would be as confusing as possible. X-Men: First Class was meant to be a retcon/reboot that altered some facts from the X-Men films, but then became the first part in a new X-Men trilogy that would lead into this summer's upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. Time travel films are very hard to handle, but when bringing the device into a franchise that already had a confusing backstory to begin with gives Fox the chance to alter things the way they want to while also paving the path for the third film in the trilogy, the already announced X-Men: Apocalypse. I kind of like what Fox is doing with X-Men, but the over-saturation of X-Men stuff over the past couple of weeks, from Carl's Jr. commercials to sharing the film's first fight sequence to the 2938238th trailer is just overkill.

Now, waters are being muddled as it's being reported that The Amazing Spider-Man 2's post-credits scene will feature a scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, fanboys will want to keep their pants on, as this isn't a sign of a crossover between the two studios/properties, but a marketing ploy between Sony and Fox. Variety's reporting that the existence of an X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2's credits is due to a pre-existing contract Marc Webb made with Fox Searchlight to shoot another film with the studio following the success of (500) Days of Summer. However, the director opted to make The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Fox agreed to let Webb out of his contract, but only if Sony would advertise X-Men: Days of Future Past for free, thus leading to an otherwise unnecessary promo for a film the majority of movie audiences would already go see.

In a perfect world, Disney would buy out Sony and Fox's Marvel properties and bring them all under the Marvel Films umbrella. However, the odds of that happening are very, very slim for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, if you're expecting something much more substantial in regards to a post-credits scene with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, your bubble has officially been burst.

Modok Takeover of Mondo Gallery in Austin, TX

Mondo Announces Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo Art Show

Keen readers will remember that one of my very first posts on Ruby Hornet was on a Mondo Gallery show that artist Mike Mitchell had last spring. The show featured Mitchell's color-filled portraits of various film characters, including Pulp Fiction's Mr. Pink, Oldboy's Oh Dae-Su, Drive's Driver, and more. The artist and Mondo have teamed up once again for a new show that will focus on the marvelous side of comic books: Marvel.

The new show, entitled "Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo," will run from April 25th until May 17th, with a special opening night event on April 25th from 7pm - 10pm with Mitchell himself in attendance. The pieces, some of which can be seen below, will highlight some of Marvel's iconic characters, like Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, alongside lesser known figures, including Bullseye and Power Man-era Luke Cage. Considering Marvel's growing stable of film properties (let alone the rising portfolio of Sony and Fox owned Marvel film properties), it's only a matter of time before lesser-known characters like MODOK, Iron Fist, and Nova are plastered onto underwear, shirts, and billboards everywhere with The Avengers and X-Men.

Some of the pieces will also be available for sale at the show in limited quantities for $60 each. You can find the list for the available pieces below. If you do attend the "Mike Mitchell x Marvel x Mondo" show, let us know how it is!

[Trailer] God's Pocket

[youtube id="eMTdOwyrWzo"]

Philip Seymour Hoffman was a man of so much talent, and his unexpected death was one that shook not just those involved in Hollywood, but also fans around the world. With a variety of works under his belt ranging from the acclaimed Capote to the successful Hunger Games, he has displayed his large range of capabilities and thus capturing the attention of people everywhere. While the great actor may no longer be here to create new works, he has left a few films behind that have yet to be viewed. He will appear in Anton Corbijn’s thriller A Most Wanted Man later this year, but first he will be featured in John Slattery’s latest drama God’s Pocket along with John Turturro.

Based on the novel by Pete Dexter and including Christina Hendricks, the film features Hoffman as Mickey Scarpato, a man who works to cover up his stepson’s death by claiming it as a “construction accident.” While the cast is excellent and the trailer looks great in my opinion, those who saw the film at Sundance, including RH’s very own Geoff, say it's a film that isn’t quite sure which direction it wants to take. It is still managing to pull a large amount of interest from critics, though, and I hope that it has been improved a bit since its shaky Sundance debut.

Whether you are a fan of Hoffman or not, I think that this would be a film worth checking out. It arrives in theaters on Friday, May 9, 2014.

Film still from Neighbors

[Video] Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, and Lisa Kudrow Talk Condoms in Neighbors Clip

At this year's SXSW, I made a ballsy proclamation by calling Neighbors the "Comedy of the Year," despite it only being March and the SXSW cut still being a rough one that needed editing. The comedic chemistry between Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids) was completely surprising, and Zac Efron's ability to actually be hilarious are some of the reasons why Neighbors was one of my favorite films from SXSW. With the film not receiving a theatrical release until next month, you'll just have to take my word for it...

...or watch this new, MTV exclusive clip from the film featuring the aforementioned Byrne and Rogen alongside a bit role from Lisa Kudrow (Friends). If the clip isn't enough, you can check out the film's first trailer that released last September, as well as read my exclusive SXSW interviews with Ike Barinholtz and Jerrod CarmichaelNeighbors will be in theaters on May 9th.

Kate Upton, Cameron, Diaz, and Leslie Mann at The Other Woman LA Press Conference

[RH Photos] The Other Woman LA Press Conference (4/11/14)

Photos by Lauren Groth of Art Room Collective

Last Friday, we had one of our friends in Los Angeles, Lauren Groth, cover the LA press conference for The Other Woman, a romantic comedy directed by Nick Cassavetes (The NotebookAlpha Dog) and starring Leslie Mann (This is 40), Cameron Diaz (Sex Tape), and Kate Upton. The film is about three women who realize they've all been with the same man at the same time. Instead of taking their anger on each other, they team up together to get revenge on him. During the press conference, Lauren took some photos, as well as some of the actors' statements on the film. Check everything out below, and be sure to catch The Other Woman when it hits theaters on April 25th.

Everyone was having a good time. It was held in a smaller conference room, so it felt quite intimate. Cameron Diaz was the main speaker out of the group. She commented on how comfortable she was working with everyone and that she had a 4 hour lunch with Leslie Mann before shooting the film, so they hit it off early.

Leslie Mann was complimented on playing a "great drunk" by one of the reporters, which she got a kick out of. She said she learned it from "all of you," possibly because the press were given mimosas and bloody marys before the conference. Kate Upton commented how much she's learned from Diaz and Mann. Mann replied saying that she thinks of Upton as a daughter since she's only five years older than her own daughter.

The two guys, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Taylor Kinney didn't speak too much. However, they did comment how they "felt" for the cheating husband character because of the sort of revenge the girls had on him. Diaz complimented Coster-Waldau for being able to play "dumb" really well. All three girls said how great the guys were in the film & how much fun they had.

Some quotes from the The Other Woman press packet:

Cameron Diaz: "I just thought it was a beautiful thing. It's about friendship and about women. What I also loved about the script is that it wasn't man-bashing and it wasn't revenge. It's about a journey that these women take with one another to learn about themselves."

Leslie Mann: "There are certain people who have an ear for comedy. It's like a song and a rhythm, so when you're doing comedy, if the other person isn't hearing the same thing as you are, it just lays there and dies. Cameron hears the same thing as I do. We can pick up where the other one lets off and it's like a good give-and-take. And Kate Upton has that, too. She knows how to play things and she's super smart."

Kate Upton: "I am so lucky to have one of my first movies to be with Leslie and Cameron. They are so inspiring."
