[RH Photos] Spring Awakening Day 1
Spring Awakening was this past weekend. and what an experience it was. Taking place this year at the legendary Soldier Field, Spring Awakening attracted the legions of EDM fans from all across the country to deliver a weekend full of sweat, bright lights, and dancing. Day 1 featured a litany of DJs, including Robbie Rivera, PANTyRAID, Dirty South, R3hab, Milk n Cookies, Nero, and Friday headliner Moby.
Some of my photos from Spring Awakening Day 1 are below, while the full catalog of photos can be found here. Photos are © Geoff Henao.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is delayed until August 2014
In a surprising turn of events, the upcoming Sin City sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has been pushed back almost a year from October 2013 to August 2014. No official word has come out explaining the delay, but I'm assuming it's due to extensive post-production work necessary for the green screen shot film. It's terrible news for fans of both the original Sin City film as well as fans of Frank Miller's comics, but the extra production time should help with the film's use of special effects. I'm sure a more official reason will come out shortly, but for now, audiences can trust that director Robert Rodriguez (Machete) will do everything in his power to ensure the delay is worthwhile.

[Trailer] Kick-Ass 2
http://youtu.be/Td921lYSBIA
The latest trailer for Kick-Ass 2 hit the internet recently, and it's looking... pretty alright. The first Kick-Ass strayed too far away from the comic, and as somebody who's just as much of a comic geek as he is a film geek, this was a big no-no. However, Kick-Ass 2, directed by Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down), looks to stay as entertaining and fun as the original. This is a welcome change of pace for comic book film adaptations as the litany of recent superhero films that are desperately trying to be dark and deep.
Kick-Ass 2 takes place after the original film where masked vigilantes are widely accepted, leading to more "superheroes" coming out from the woodwork. However, Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), now calling himself The Mother Fucker, is ready to take revenge out on Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) and Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). However, with a large group of superheroes supporting him, including Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), Kick-Ass is prepared to enter a war with his ex-comrade.
Kick-Ass 2 will kick asses when it comes to theaters on August 16th.
Rumor: Instagram bites Vine's style, plans to implement videos
Facebook is playing catch up lately, first implementing hashtags on the popular social network last week. Now, rumors are spreading that they will announce a Vine-like video feature for Instagram, the photo-sharing app that Facebook acquired last April. With Vine itself having multiplied its user base with its release on Android two weeks ago, Facebook is doing its best to stay on the same playing field.
Tech Crunch cites an unnamed source pointing at a "Video Instagram" app to be announced on June 20th. Whether it will function within the Instagram app or be its own app is yet to be determined. However, the source claims that the video clips will run for five to 10 seconds, surpassing Vine's maximum allotment of six seconds. Given that this is rumored to be an Instagram-branded application, fans of the X-Pro II, Sierra, Walden, and other filters of its ilk should be implemented with the new service. Finally, aspiring camera phone photographers can break into the video business.

[Trailer] The Wolf of Wall Street
[youtube id="iszwuX1AK6A" mode="normal" align="center"]
The Wolf of Wall Street is the fifth collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. When a director and actor are able to click on a creative level, movie magic happens, as can be seen by the pair's previous films (The Departed, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Aviator). The Wolf of Wall Street is based off of Jordan Belfort's memoir of the same name where he details his rise and fall in the stock market.
Money talks, and that certainly rings true throughout the entire trailer. Paired with Kanye West's "Black Skinhead," the trailer is full of energy and really good editing. When Scorsese and DiCaprio make a film together, you know it's going to be good; with Jonah Hill (This is the End) and Matthew McConaughey (Killer Joe) supporting, the humor will definitely be covered. It might not be the action film we'd want from the Scorsese and DiCaprio, but they definitely know how to do drama.
The Wolf of Wall Street will be out on November 15th.
Y: The Last Man film adaptation might begin production next year
With comic book adaptations all the rage these days, Hollywood has become more open to adapting some amazing series. Sure, a majority of these adaptations are niche superhero genre films, but with the success of Marvel's films, The Dark Knight trilogy, and The Walking Dead spreading like the virus, comic book adaptations aren't as risky as they used to be. This is great for some properties, as they'll receive the proper mainstream attention they deserve. However, if mishandled improperly, they could cause more harm than good (re: Watchmen).
Y: The Last Man by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra is a dystopic comic book series where an epidemic killed every mammal with a Y chromosome except for Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand. When they're discovered to be the only two living mammals left, the government assigns him a bodyguard, Agent 355, to ensure he makes it safely to a genetics lab in Boston to find why he and Ampersand are immune.
While the series spanned 60 issues and covers an extended period of time, current plans for the film adaptation are to condense it into one film. This would be a disservice to both the series and fans of the comic. However, plans could change, as nothing is set in stone. The film's producer, David Goyer (Man of Steel), recently stated the production could begin in 2014 and that the film should stand on its own, but be expandable. Y: The Last Man would fit better within the TV series format a la The Walking Dead, but a trilogy might be enough. I'll say this about it: if you haven't read Y: The Last Man, I urge you to go to your local comic book store and pick up a trade.

[Trailer 2] Only God Forgives
[yahoo id="movies.yahoo.com/video/only-god-forgives-trailer-2-200017747"]
The theatrical trailer for director Nicolas Winding Refn's (Drive) and Ryan Gosling's (Drive) second collaboration, Only God Forgives, was released over the weekend. The film received an iffy reaction from crowds when it premiered at Cannes last month, but it should find a solid following from fans of Drive. I still can't get enough of the color scheme Refn utilized for the film, and it'll be interesting to see how much of an effect the color scheme will affect the scenes. This one's a quick post because I'm trying to be as open as I can be when I check out Only God Forgives next month when it hits theaters on July 19th.

The Weekly Swarm: 6/10 - 6/16
This week's "The Weekly Swarm" is a little late, and I apologize for that. I was covering Spring Awakening all weekend, trying my best not to give in to the temptations of flashing lights, half-naked girls, and off-beat dancing to a lot of wub wub wub. It was a fun weekend getting an inside look at a scene I don't know much about. The photos from Spring Awakening will be going up later this week, so if I took photos of you over the past few days: fear not, they'll be up in a few days.
Last week was action-packed: E3 2013 took place, shaping the next generation of video games with Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 settling their prices and release windows, the trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was released, we got word of a surprise project from Jay-Z, Bobby took us to space with awesome photographs of the Earth, and much, much more.
We also welcomed Brynn Bixby to the Ruby Hornet team. Everybody welcome Brynn! Props to Brynn, Bobby, and Pedro for holding it down last week.
