RTC: Treasurechest's Blog #6

I just got a copy of the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack in the mail, so I got that going for me...Other than that, it's been kind of a low key Monday for me.  I originally wanted to take a day off, but Naledge and Dre both reminded me that the internet does not stop cause there are always people like them that go on RH @ 3AM and wonder why the site's not been updated in the last couple hours...Anyway, the reason for my slowness today goes back to last week Thursday and the first of what seemed to be like 8 birthday parties for my main man, Virgil Solis, aka Benny Rocs.  We took the party to Empire Liquors where I DJ'ed a small set with Willy Joy and DJ Major Taylor.  The place was packed and our girl Nina was also there celebrating her birthday...Let me just say that I dropped "Birthday Sex" and I believe both of them had a good time...

Dave Jeff: PHLIer Than The Rest Of Them

Dave Jeff

Chicago has a lot of things going on right now, and quite frankly, it’s a crazy place to be in at the moment. There is so much developing in this city, as well as established things exploding and finally getting the attention or recognition that they deserve. Celebs are being spotted in Leaders gear, and some up and coming artists are no longer considered up and coming.  One man that's been able to see the movement of it all is Dave Jeff, owner and founder of PHLI Worldwide, recognized as one of Chicago's first sneaker boutiques, and the first to carry its only line exclusively.

In our continuing coverage of Chicago's fashion scene, we linked up with Dave Jeff to discuss street wear's past, current, and future.  The PHLI guy lets us in on Chicago's streetwear history, friends and enemies, and bursts some preconceived bubbles...Check it out below.

The Black Lips: Damn...They Did What?

The Black Lips

Atlanta's Black Lips have been dubbed the hardest working band by The New York Times, as well as completely kicked out of India for their raucous live show.  In a rock n' roll band's hierarchy of achievements, I'm not sure which ranks higher.  The self-described flower-punk band has readied its new LP on Vice Records, and 200 Million Thousand hit record stores, online retailers and the like on February 24th.  We caught up with the Black Lips to talk about the new LP, how it stands measures up to Kanye West's swagger of 100 thousand trillion, as well as their now infamous trip to the land of Slumdog Millionaire.  Check out the full interview below.

Clark Kent

This is my Clark Kent blog.  A real good guy, Clark Kent was.  Stand out journalist, dedicated truth seeker, great friend, modest, and really knew how to keep a secret. I have a pair of glasses that I don't wear that much, that are Clark Kent-ish.  I bought them when I was a freshmen in college. I always resisted glasses before that, but I couldn't read the overhead in Dr. Weiskopf's Psych 101 and decided it was time to see clearly.  At the time, I felt like thick black glasses were the way to go because if I was going to wear glasses, I wasn't going to play around and try to camoflauge or get too cute, just give me the black frames...I'm wearing glasses dammit!

RH FIrst Look: Shawn Chrystopher

Shawn Chrystopher

Ever since I've been on this earth my parents have drilled into my head the importance of education. You know how it is when you're younger and you take what they say for granted but as you grow into your own you begin to really notice how important attaining an education is. Many people believe that this concept has been abandoned in the Hip Hop community. It seems that critiques tend to draw conclusions on the entire community. Many believe that at a time in Hip Hop it wasn't "cool" to be an intellect or "cool" to have something positive going for yourself. Personally I disagree with that. Hip Hop has always been about bettering yourself as a person, whether that being mentally or socially.

With the "New Age" of Hip Hop hitting the scene, we are starting to notice a growing trend of college educated artists, artists like Wale, Asher Roth, and Shawn Chrystopher. Graduating from a California high school at the age of 16, Shawn Chrystopher then attended the University of Southern California. The kid also plays 5 different instruments, brings paintings to the studio, and says he doesn't really listen to Hip Hop at all besides Kanye and Jeezy. "Other than that I listen to Coldplay, Radiohead, Nina Simone, John Mayer, Jackson 5,  Queens of the Stoneage, Brazilian Girls, and The Killers, "says Chrystopher.

Read what these influences have lead Shawn Chrystopher to cultivate in his own music and more in an in-depth First Look below.
