A$AP Ferg: "DTM Awards '14" ("Trophies" Remix)

A$AP Ferg has spent the past few months relishing over the big victory he scored with his recent release, Trap Lord, which has been in constant rotation over here at RubyHornet since it dropped. Today, as  "DTM Awards '14", the New York City and A$AP Mob rapper dropped his remix to Drake's "Trophies" and also announced a tentative release date for the full A$AP Mob project with a tweet, pointing at March 4 for the official release. Check out the latest from the 'Hood Pope' streaming here below.

[Album] Mike Golden & Friends: "Utopia"

Mike Golden & Friends have been slowly building themselves into one of the premier acts to catch in the increasingly crowded Chicago music scene and yesterday they dropped their latest release, Utopia to continue that climb. Teased over the last few weeks with the behind the scenes video for the single "Mary Jane" featuring Vic Mensa and Donnie Trumpet, Utopia is a truly transcendental project for the group, who bring together a myriad of influences and sounds to create the soulful, highly instrumental sound that sees the band float between rock, blues and post-punk sensibilities behind the strong-voiced Mike Golden at the helm.

Utopia demonstrates a certain growth that comes naturally for a band in their 20s, a slightly more mature, developed songwriting and computed worldview that bleeds through in the music. On "Best Part", Golden glosses over aiming for the sweetest time in a relationship, aka the best part, singing, "I just wanna make it to the best part,". On the album's title track, he explains, "When you wake depends on when you take a hold of it," As the rap scene in Chicago seems to take over how people view the city, acts like MG&F demonstrate the true range of music coming out of The Second City. A sold out show last Friday at the House of Blues in Chicago was a fitting celebration of the group's latest release since 2011's well-received Groceries and served as a proper introduction for a project that we should see pop up quite a bit throughout this year.

[Video] King Krule: "A Lizard State"

King Krule is a weird guy. From his voice to his style to the music he makes, everything has a bit of a different feel to it. That sensibility is on display in his latest visual, this one for his track, "A Lizard State" from his latest project, 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, which made waves when it dropped late last summer. The video opens with a scene out of Alfred Hitchcock's Dial M For Muder, with Hitchcock walking sideways on a wall, explaining that the following story is about "An undertaker and who he undertakes" before cutting to a phone and a growl from King Krule, who then jumps into the somewhat haunting, 60s-inspired song. The whole video has a bit of film noir to it with dark shots and shadows throughout.

According to Director Jamie-James Medina: "Archy and I both love Hitchcock and we've spent a lot of time away from music talking about his films. When I heard the phone ringing over the intro all I could think about was Dial M For Murder and the scene where Grace Kelly answers the phone. That really started the conversation. I had this idea of Hitchcock introducing King Krule. I've seen every episode of Hitchcock Presents and every introduction that he gives is brilliant - you could use any episode and it would work. We loved the idea of Archy defying gravity and that being the setting for his performance. But right up until shooting we didn't know if we'd get permission to use the Hitchcock footage - to have him appear. Its such an honor that the Hitchcock estate gave us the opportunity. And then at the very end he said, 'and the room is full of lizards', so we had to find a set of lizards and managed to get a guy who entertains at children's parties."

Check out the latest from Krule below and catch him live on tour now.

SXSW 2014 Announces Expanded Lineup

Yesterday, South by Southwest organizers announced the full lineup for this year's massive week-long music-industry meet and greet in Austin, Texas. Included in the avalanche announcement to perform at official showcases throughout the six-day event were Melsisa Etheridge, Action Bronson, Allen Stone, The Dum Dum Girls, Vic Mensa, Mobb Deep, Charlie XCX, Big Freedia, Cody ChestnuTT, The Tontons, and many more that joined the bulging roster of over 1,200 acts slated to perform during SXSW 2014.

According to the Associated Press, "In 2013, more than 25,000 people saw 2,278 acts during the festival." 3 million Xbox Ones, 4.2 million PlayStation 4s sold in 2013

Monday, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One sold 3 million units across 13 different countries in 2013. That's 3 million units in fiveweeks. Astounding number, isn't it? After all, that extra million is on top of the 2 million Xbox Ones the company sold in the console's first eight days. Quite an accomplishment, no?

However, just as Sony was wont to do in 2013, demonstrated by their E3 debut of the system in which Sony not only undercut the Xbox One's price point, but also poked fun at Microsoft's DRM policy, they swept the rug from under Microsoft and stole some of their thunder. At Sony's CES keynote yesterday, the company announced that it sold 4.2 million PS4s in the final six weeks of 2013.

In case you're wondering, Nintendo has sold 3.92 million Wii Us as of October 2013 since its launch in November 2012. They just can't catch a break, can they?

With both the PS4 and Xbox One yet to launch in Japan, as I noted recently, expect that number to increase exponentially during the first quarter of 2014. If you're a visual person, IGN has a few bar graphs comparing the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U against one another, as well as lifetime and launch sales of the PS3, 360, and Wii.

PlayStation Now to stream old PlayStation games to PS4, PS Vita

When Sony bought Gakai back in the summer of 2011, it was always assumed that they would use the cloud service to stream PS3 games for the upcoming PlayStation 4. Today, the Japanese company confirmed their plans with their announcement of PlayStation Now. Currently, PS3 games are confirmed to be a part of the service, allowing PS4 owners to stream PS3 games to the PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and select Bravia TVs with additional devices planned for the future. PS2 and PS1 games are also rumored to be available through PlayStation Now, although the official press release hasn't addressed their availability. A beta run for the service is set to begin at the end of the month with a roll out scheduled for the summer.

There are no details as to how the service will function, but Sony has noted that a subscription plan is in the works for gamers to choose from an assortment of games, as well as the ability to stream individual titles. There's no word on whether or not gamers who already own copies of the game will have access to them or have to pay a fee (much like the PS3 to PS4 upgrade service). One thing's for sure: it won't be long before us PS4 owners can get rid of our PS3s collecting dust.

Polaroid Socialmatic Camera to Officially Launch at CES 2014

With CES 2014 well on its way in Las Vegas, one product that many people have been anticipating is Polaroid's Socialmatic Camera AKA the Instagram camera. It will officially launch this week at CES, so that means we can see it for sale within the next month or two. ADR Studio are the geniuses behind the camera. Housing a 14 megapixel digital camera (front and back), the camera can also print a 2x3 full color photo thanks to ZINK Zero (the guys behind the ink printing technology). Good news for us photo nerds who can't wait to get their hands on this guy. Be sure to check out this overview video from ADR Studio about the camera, as well.

Alex Wiley Releases Four New Tracks

One of the more impressive debut projects from last year was Alex Wiley's banger-heavy Club Wiley, distributed by Chicago independent label, Closed Sessions. Released at the beginning of the summer, a steady stream of videos and support shows both in and out of his hometown have brought Wiley to the forefront of the next wave of artists to leap from the bubbling scene in the Midwest. With little new music hitting the Internet since the release of the project, Closed Sessions celebrated a new year by pulling a Beyonce, unexpectedly dropping four songs via ClosedSessions.com. The short project sees Wiley demonstrate all sides of his rhyming capabilities, spitting verses over Master P's "Make Em Say Uggh", as well as an eclectic gathering of beats courtesy of The Odd Couple that show Wiley is an artist to be reckoned with in the Second City. The recently released songs, which you can stream and download below, are also a bit of promotional fodder for Wiley's show on January 18 at Reggie's Rock House in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood, tickets available here.
