Rumor: Marvel approaching Katee Sackhoff for a Captain Marvel film?
Earlier this week, Marvel shorts director Louis D’Esposito (Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter) was discussing Marvel’s interest in a female-led superhero film, stating: “There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero…[W]e have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”
Interestingly enough, rumors have come out that Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff was approached and asked about her availability by, you guessed it, Marvel. During a podcast interview with Schmoes Know, Sackhoff shared a tidbit of information: “Um… There’s been some stuff going on. Um… there’s been a lot of checking of availability… I don’t quite know exactly… I don’t know… there’s been a lot of questions about the first quarter of next year and then the…”
Q1 2014 is when Avengers: Age of Ultron begins shooting, and if Marvel continues their standard of superhero cameos, she could be appearing as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, leading into her own feature-length film in Phase 4. Whatever the case may be, I’m especially glad that Marvel understands the importance of their female characters, both those introduced in the films and those who have yet to appear, and the allure of multifaceted, strong female leads would serve to be a great contrast to the superhero genre driven by over-masculine characters.

Facebook hashtags proven to have no viral effect
Remember back in June when Facebook implemented hashtags to their site? I personally wasn't a fan of the addition, simply because Facebook's social network doesn't exactly promote natural viral spread amongst its users the way Twitter does. The reason for this is because Facebook is mostly built as a website for friends and family to connect with each other, as well as allowing businesses to seep through these connections for advertising and marketing. Because of these connections, it's somewhat of a closed-off, private social network that doesn't allow for full public access the same way Twitter does. For hashtags and metadata collection to have a real impact, they need to be tracked within a large public space that isn't limited to the X amount of friends John Doe is connected to.
Research done by EdgeRank Checker recently proves that the addition have hashtags have had no viral effect on Facebook. In fact, Facebook updates without hashtags had more of a viral reach than updates that did. EdgeRank hypothesized the reason behind this was due to users simply not clicking on the hashtags because brands/users weren't using hashtags properly. However, I personally believe this is due to the closed access on Facebook that I mentioned previously.
Whatever the case, Facebook tried to ride Twitter's wave a bit too slate. Now, status updates are littered with pointless hashtags that don't even lead to anything. Thanks, Mark Zuckerberg!

Transformers 4 is in an Age of Extinction
After what felt like months of speculation, the rumors have been confirmed: Michael Bay's 4th Transformers film will feature the fan-favorite Dinobots. Also confirmed earlier this week is the film's official title: Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. No other details have been revealed regarding plot or the Dinobots' importance on the film, but the fact that they exist is enough to reinvigorate excitement for a film franchise that has grown stale with every subsequent sequel. Transformers 4 already had Mark Wahlberg and robots, but now it has robot dinosaurs? Michael Bay, just take my money already.

Microsoft buys Nokia's phone division for $7.2 billion
Microsoft's presence in the phone industry is about to increase. Earlier today, it was announced that the company has bought out Nokia's handset division for 5.44 billion Euros (roughly $7.2 billion). What this means for Microsoft is a much larger stake in the phone industry currently dominated by Apple and Samsung. Nokia's boss, Stephen Elop, will be rejoining Microsoft after initially leaving the company to help run Nokia back in 2010. It's rumored that he will be groomed to become Microsoft's CEO after current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced his intentions to retire after 12 months.
The news comes with a bit of sadness as Nokia hasn't had much of a hold on the phone industry they once were atop of. As recently as 2013, the company had a 40% market share, but that percentage has dwindled to a lowly 15%. The Finnish company will focus their attention on their "networking equipment unit, navigation business and technology patents."
Such is the fate of many technological businesses unable to adapt within an industry full of technological advances everyday.

Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki is retiring
Over nearly two decades, Studio Ghibli has been one of the most popular animation studios in Japan with films like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke captivating audiences around the world. Behind the studio's success is director, animator, and writer Hayao Miyazaki who, at one point, was considered to be the Walt Disney of Japan. What separates Miyazaki from other contemporary animators are his strong female characters and willingness to explore social issues within the framework of family-friendly anime films.
However, it appears that his time working on films has come to an end. Studio Ghibli president Hoshino Koji announced at this year's Venice Film Festival that Miyazaki will be retiring at the young age of 72. Ghibli fans may remember that he announced his retirement almost a decade ago, but come back after a brief hiatus. No other details have come out, but Miyazaki is expected to still hold a role within Studio Ghibli.
With other directors groomed to continue the Ghibli legacy, including Miyazaki's own son, Goro, that patented "Hayao Miyazaki" touch will be kept intact.... somewhat. Miyazaki's latest/last film, The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) will be arriving Stateside soon, so we have at least one more classic film from Miyazaki before we can give him a proper goodbye. If you've somehow never seen a Miyazaki film, I highly recommend Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke.
